air pump noise help

my air pump is making a "wurrrr" type noise. when i rev it a bit it gets louder and i can hear it at what seems to be slightly slower rpm than the motor. more rpm's = louder noise. i'm not sure if i just never noticed this before or if something is wrong

Mine has made a slight noise for years. I can barely hear it now because of the blower but it's still there. I will wait for it to become really loud before I replace it. It's nothing to worry about.

Shaun's experience with them is the norm. They often are kinda noisy but otherwise innocuous.

The common spots that cause noise are the leaf bushings adjacent the vanes and the bakelite vanes themselves scoring the wall due to bearing issues. If a mainshaft bearing lets go, you'll start getting a higher pitched squeal.

I have pictures of what the pumps look like inside if you want to open it up. In my experience, once you open one and clean it out, you have to periodically open and lube them or they don't last too long. Also, prolonged periods of non-use can cause seizing issues.

Yeah mine sounded like a rod knock. I was freakin out!!! Then I found it with my stethoscope and was relieved. I just put a short belt and voila! No more problems.

i'm not planning on opening it if this isn't abnormal but i wouldn't mind seeing the pics out of curiousity if you feel like posting them

What's the PN for the belt. Also, is there a thread here or a how to that shows how to delete this stuff. I've been considering deleting this and the EGR but am worried about how it affects emissions testing.

I would run the 90.5 personally because the 90 is very tight, maybe too tight.

As far as the EGR, I would leave it. It doesn't hurt your performance. But if you are insistent on removing it, you can. It will make your NoX (nitrogen oxides) output skyrocket, but if your state doesn't measure NoX like Arizona, then it's not a problem.

I only have one pic uploaded right now (I think I have a few different pics on the other puter). This gives an idea though. You can see the two bakelite vanes exiting the drum and touching the inner wall. You can sometimes see scrape marks on the inner wall - that suggests mainshaft play or leaf bushing wear (not allowing the vanes to retract into the drum smoothly. Instead, the vanes hit the walls and drag - as the right vane in the picture is).

It's a real PITA to try and lube those little bearings that ride on the mainshaft. They're neat little roller bearings and are almost impossible to repack with grease.

After reading your post I realized that I have under driven pullies. Would you happen to know if the belt would work on non stock pullies?

I don't think it will work. If you do some searching on this site, you will find tons of threads about short belt info. Many reference which underdrives they are using.
