what is an air silencer? some mustang owners are removing them. Should i do it? Is it a noticeable gain? Is there any risk to getting water up in the engine? How long does it take to remove? I assume this air silencer is around the intake or throttle body. Please help. I have a 2003 gt. My email is cowboy_fan28@yahoo.com

If you look down at the plastic air filter housing you will notice a rubber snorkle connected to it.
The snorkle is the air silencer.
It is intended to draw cooler air from the wheelwell into the intake.
Unfortunatly, end of the snorkle is narrow and resticts incoming air.
Many people just remove the snorkle, which allows more air but the air is hotter.
Many (myself included) just trim the silencer with a knife to make the silencer just meet the hole in the wheelwell.
This creates a larger opening and maintains the "cold air" setup by Ford.

I didn't notice.
But tests have shown 1-3hp and torque increase.
According to tests, removing the snorkle completely boosted HP but lowered Torque.
This gives gains on both.

This is likely the most repeated thread here ... an excellent candidate for "search".

In the most recent issue of 5.0 Mustangs, they dyno'd gobs of different mods on a 4.6L. While gaining a couple of hp's & lb-ft's way up high in the tach band, they lost a BUNCH of torque down below 1500 rpm's. This only re-enforces my INDIVIDUAL decision to leave it the hell alone. Only my $0.02...

Thanks for the input . I think I lost some torque when I installed flowmaster mufflers. I wonder if I put new stock mufflers back on if I will get the torque back?

Removing the air silencer was first mod I did to my car. MM&FF claims a 1-2 rwhp gain on this simple mod. As jas142 said a pony or two is better than nothing

Did absolutely nothing but make a whoosh noise when flooring it.
I don't know how anyone can say 1-2 HP gain, that's less than 1% increase in power which could be caused by anything.

unless ur like super duper in racing and crave every HP- do whatever u want. i mean 2 HP isnt gonna do crap for anyone 99% of them time. IE if ur racing on the street and ur friend has 2 more HP then u- u can over come that by...i dunno his lane having 5 more rocks then yours?

oh yeh and whoever wants to put their stock mufflers back im going to advise against that because 1 u spent money on the muffs (assuming) 2 flowmaster sounds better then stock 3 u wont notice a difference

I definitely disagree. Accepting a loss of bunch of torque below 1500 rpm for a meager gain of 1-2 rwhp somewhere above 4000 rpm ... IMHO ... is a horrible trade. You may do a mod that gains you some hp somewhere, but did you lose somewhere else in the hp or torque curves? If so, is it worth it? In this particular instance, I would venture "no" ... But that is strictly ONLY an opinion... (no slam intended, el_kid_1 )
