I have the Viper 791XV Responder and I love it. It has the display on the remote that gives you a visual of what is open or what type of sensor goes off (shock or proximity.) It also pages you if your alarm is set off. The pager feature doesn't work well from too far a distance or if you are in a mall or theater etc but does work well if you are within 100 yds of your car. It also comes with a remote start which is a cool feature. The main reason I got this is so I can add the GPS tracking option that has some great features. Here is the link with a news clip about the GPS

http://www.directed.com/security/viper/gps.asp

Keep in mind that this is not cheap: $600 for the alarm and $700 for the GPS

I personally like the alarms made by DEI, but so long as you buy a good brand name, you should be fine.

Almost any decent quality alarm will have circuitry for trunk and hood. But if they don't, you should be able to tie them into the circuit for the doors. For my alarm I tied the hood and trunk together into the same circuit. The alarm does not know which was opened when it goes off.

The hardest part about trunk and hood is that you never had a factory switch (for lights etc), so you'll have to install your own hood and trunk pin switch.

Features to look for:
1) Remote distance. I like an alarm with lots of range.
2) Controls for power windows and locks incase you ever want to install in future and would like alarm to control. (my alarm locks the doors and rolls up the windows when armed).

Alot of alarms nowadays have paging features.. which would be neat if they had any range. But still good for when your alarm goes off at night and you'd normally sleep through it. Something else you might want to look into.

now...remote start...how well will that work on a carburated car? i dont have an electronic ignition so im sure that will help.

i like the remote door idea...i plan to do that when i get the alarm or at least very soon after... remote windows i hadnt thought of because ive heard its alot of work to convert to power windows?

the only alarm ive heard was good were viper alarms..a friend has on by prestige and she isnt to happy with it..other than that im not to familiar with the brand names....

DEI owns viper.. also owns Clifford. Good alarms IMO.

Power windows were a bit of work, but not all that bad. Well, at least for my 70. The actual wiring took more time than the rest of the installation. If you buy power windows I DEFINATELY reccomend buying a switch kit which comes with wiring. It would have taken me alot longer without it.

Remote start on a carbed car is a PITA. There are some fancy setups that have a solenoid to pump the gas a couple of times, etc.. but expensive and not very reliable. Personally I don't drive my mustang in the winter, so see little use for remote start.
