recheck all your wires with the diagram below.if all wires are correct ..remove #1 cylinder plug and place your finger over the sparkplug hole and seal hole with your finger. then turn engine by hand until the pressure blows your finger off the hole. insert a screwdriver carefully into the sparkplug hole til it touches the top of the piston and continue turning engine carefully until the piston reaches the top which you will see using the screwdriver. at this point you will be at top dead center remove dist. if necessary but ensure the rotor button is pointing at the #1 plug wire on the cap and you have equal amount of movement twisting dist. to right and left. install cap and attempt to start you may have to twist dist. but it should start.

Nice post by Bill. You sound like your dizzy stab was a little off and you might be 180 out.

Good luck.

I agree dizzy must be out 180 degrees. I don't know why but it is really easy to do.

How and why do you plan on checking your timing if the motor can't even run?

JF, he can still get a base [cranking] time on it. It's enough to see if one is even in the ballpark. The hope is that once in said ballpark, the car runs well enough to set the hot-idle timing.

to update: so it fired last night for about 30 seconds as i said earlier i charged the battery and got nothing today absolutely nothing just turn and turn and turn. i am down to thinking it may be bad grounding i grounded the battery to the strut tower but am now told the best thing is to ground it to the motor and as anj electrical newbie i thought with solid motor mounts the motor would be sufficiently grounded but i am being told not so much and i have to ground it better therefore it will be a few days before i can get back to the car again but im hoping this will help me out because i only get like 4 tries and the battery dies yet i put the same battery in my fiance's 69 gto and it works just fine with a 455 so thats my update if the ground sounds like it could be an issue please let me know
