Manual steering. Its such a hassle driving it with a standard. I need to be able to turn the steering wheel with ease with one hand since my other hand is shifting, lets say if i'm turning from a complete stop. Its such a bitch. Ahhh. Worst part is is that I only have my 200 ci and there arent any power steering kits for those in any mustang shops. Someone please help me, show me a way to make my 200 into power steering! I'm dying! Even if I only have the engine for one more year, i need power steering. Where can I get a kit for my 6 cyl?

Hey man I work out every other day, I'm strong enough to deal with it. I just hate not being able to let the wheel glide through my hand when I turn it and it goes back into position. I hate having it jerk back, such a bitch to deal with.

Such a nice guy :D . Oh well I figured it out. I've got 1000 dollars layin around so I'm gonna start looking for a V8. Have some friends help me find a 289 or 302. Spend some money on just the block, build it up get the rack and pinion with power steering probably from TCP. Now dont let me know this is gonna cost a lot of money because i know it is. A WHOLE LOT of money. But I need this car as a daily driver and it would be great to have it act as a new car but keep the old car feel. Just turned in an application for a job and if i get that Ill be working as much as I can saving up every penny devoted to getting my car to be as modern as possible without it being noticable. Sorry if this isnt how you guys look at classics but its my car and I'm gonna do what i want. Thank ya! Any help if people would like to donate parts or try to sell them to me to get on my way, PM me and I will look into it.

Gee, what's with today's youth? :D When I was in my teens, I had a 65 coupe, 302 with manual steering and a 12 inch steering wheel along with a 3 speed stick and manual drum brakes! Today I'm a little lazier, I have a 67 coupe with a 302, manual steering, but with the stock large diameter wheel and power front discs and a 4 speed stick. You may need to up your workout. I do 60 lb. curls every morning, so manual steering is just a minor nusance.

I wonder if he has a stock steering wheel or not? Putting a stocker back in if he doesn't would give him a lot more leverage. My stang had a 3 speed behind the V8 and manual steering and I don't remember having that much trouble with the stock wheel. Of course I'm a big 'ol boy (and I don't necessarily mean I look like Ah-nold in his hey day) and he sorta looks like a cane pole leaning on that hood compared to me. My buddy had a Grant 3 spoke in his 302/C4 '67 and he's about 124 lbs and it takes him both arms to turn the wheel, heck it does me too in his car. Hard to imagine that the extra 1.5" to 2" (can't remember if the stock wheel is 15" of 16") of radius would make that much difference in leverage, but it does.

haha that picture was taken over a year ago. Since then i've gained a whole lot of weight. I'm 189 lbs now, 10% body fat. Ya'll dont understand, i dont have a problem turning the steering wheel. I have a problem with being 16 and being used to modern cars with power steering and liking it a lot more. Too much play in my steering, too much shock going through my steering wheel throwing my car all over the road, things like that. Ya'll got my point wrong.

EDIT: I've got a grant steering wheel...the one that looks like its made for classic mustangs. its alot better than my original steering wheel that was like 8 inches.

Hmm... I'm 265 lbs and you'd think I'm 50% body fat, but when I was in the pool this past week, I found I still don't float, I must be full of sh....., wait, sometimes that floats, I don't know what it is, it's not that I'm 7'2 in which case 265 might not fit that bad, but at 5'11", I look like a fire plug.

Anyway, STOP DRIVING MODERN CARS!!!!

There, does that fix the problem? It's a heck of a lot cheaper anyways.

I think the stock wheel is 16" in diameter, measure the wheel you have in there now. Grant makes 3 different sized classic wheels, a 13.5", a 14" and a 15". If you have a 13.5", the extra inches make a bunch of difference even though you'd think not. I'm also wondering if there is a difference in steering ratio between a I-6 equipped car and a V8 equipped one. The Steering Store website shows a 16:1 manual box (3.75 turns lock to lock), a 19.9:1 box (4.625 turns L to L) for '65-'66 Mustangs and a 22:1 (6 turns L to L) for the Comet, Fairlane, and Falcon of the same years. Check how many turns you have. Won't make that much difference in effort, but it'll turn more with the faster ratio and that might make a difference.

'nother point to consider is wheels and tires... how large are the tires on your car? The larger the tire - the more steering effort and input required. It's been quite a few years since I had my '65 with 200 inline 3spd unsyncro'd first gear - but I kept it 'stock'. It wasn't bad - just drove like a truck. Never even missed the p/s at 65mph

Seriously though, unless you are going to spend boatloads of cash - I'm afraid the only way to get that 'new car' feel is to buy a new car. You could try an alignment change to give you a stronger 'on center' feel...

:rlaugh: I had a 65 with a 289, no AC, no PS, auto. Man was that car hot and hard to steer at low speeds. Still, I was SO HAPPY to have it, I'd have driven it with one hand if I had to.

Start with the basic, when was it lubed last?
Even with manual box the wheel should self center after turns.
Check for binding in box and linkage.
raise front on stands and slowly turn from left to right and see if there is
a "sticky spot" where effort to turn wheel is felt.
How close is the wheel alinement?

few things to check that are free.

whoa....i know you said you didnt want to hear this, but...$1000....you might be able to buy a used 302.....but the other stuff you mentioned....is another $5000+

Power steering won't necessarily take out any play in steering, it may actually add some! The PS for early vehicles like these wasn't all that great in many people's opinions, I have it, and its ok but it does have some play. Changing to a V-8 is not an easy task.. you need to do suspension, tranny, brakes, etc.

haha I already know everything you guys are telling me. dont worry i've got it figured out, none of this will be happening anytime soon, and after driving it today i must have forgotten its really not that big of a deal. For some reason I just thought it was, but after driving it today I'm going to leave it manual til I get a V8. The V8 i'm getting will be built up over time with MY OWN money. So of course I'm going to have to save up with a job I have and yeah it will cost a lot of money. I'm keeping this car as long as possible...no future plans of selling it. So yes...this being my ONE daily driver for the next 5 to 7 years I will put a lot of money into it to make it feel like a modern car...but enough opinions, i'm gonna do what i'm gonna do

Good to hear it buddy...as I'm sure I have told you or you will see in my Sig................I will get the 6 running good...deal with the no ac...p/s....and I might add powerbrakes for safety reasons. Then way down the road I will build up my suspension and an engine with P/S.....A/C and all the hoofangled accessories....I am just hoping my dad will pay for everything until I turn 16....I better work fast haha.

*cough* wuss! *cough*

J/K! :-)

But seriously, I can't help you with the power steering, but I can tell you that you'll get used to it. My first 2 cars (a nissan pick-up and a CRX) both were manual steering. Mind you they were R&P but still. After a while, you just get used to it. I actually am more at home now with manual steering than power steering.

Working out doesn't fix the problem either...different muscles than you probably work. I'm not a big guy and I can tell you I have little to no trouble turning my wheel. Power steering is the last thing I want to put on my car.
