I know its been brought up before probably, but we picked up my wifes 65 coupe tonight and the ALT light stays on. It has a brand new Alt in it, and a red top battery. Where do I go to from there?

First I would suggest checking the connections to the alternator, making sure they are correct then check the plug to the voltage regulator.

How old is the (assuming you still have the mechanical) regulator? I had a new one go bad in under 2 months last year. Also check the alternator harness - my original one had a bad wire that was virtually undetectable. They are relitively cheap to replace (under $25) if there are any doubts

I had the same problem with my 65....after replacing the alternator, battery and checking the connections it ended up being the voltage reg. You can pick one up from nappa for like 10 bucks or something and its a quick unplug and plug install, and two mounting screws, takes all of 5 min.

cool, I will look into that...now forgive me please because this is my first Classic Stang, the VR is by the drivers side headlight isnt it? Seems like a strange place to put it, since the ALT is on the other side

Is is a one wire ALT or original style? If it has a one wire ALT in it and the voltage regulator is still there, the ALT light will stay on.

There is an easy way to check if the regulator is working. Basically jump across 2 specific wires on at the regulator and start the car. If it charges, the regulator is good. If not, replace. I can get you the specific locations, if you need as I got a pre-made jumper set that does it.

I suggest paying a little more for an electronic type regulator, if the item mentioned has points. They are interchangeable and less faulty.

Damn! Wouldn't you know it? Now I have the same the problem. Came on the other night when I was coming home from Taekwondo, then worked fine the next morning on the way to work - checked battery with volt meter to be sure I was getting 14.5-ish volts. Came back on that afternoon and hasn't turned off since - also not charging. I'll have to look at it next week when I get back in town.

Well, I will be needing headlights tonight so I got a transistorized voltage reg off of my neighbour. Took two minutes to change - problem solved.
