Is there a way to use a newer alt in an 85 gt? What wires would go where?

3G install into an 85 or earlier Mustang:

I would recommend the addition of a 2 amp fuse on the Light Green/Red wire that goes to the switched ignition.
I would use a maximum of 150 amp fuse for the output wire that connects to the starter solenoid.

jrichker:

1) Why does the factory run a fuselink on the yellow wire and send it all the way to the solenoid?

2) I thought the factory green w/red runs to the amp meter. Why put a fuse there?

The yellow wire is sense voltage for the regulator. It is supposed to compensate for any small volage drop across the power feed wiring. Fusing it protects the wiring should the regulator have an internal failure and short to ground.

The green/red wire is the Run sense wire that is used to turn on the regulator. Fusing it protects the wiring if it develops a short or if the regulator has an internal failure and shorts to ground.
