Alternative Installation For Oil Temp Gauge?

I ordered an Auto Meter gauge for oil temp. It is an electrical gauge. I was tol that I have to weld an adapter into my oil pan for placement. However, I do not feel like pulling my motor to install a gauge.

Is there an alternative place to install an electrical oil temp gauge?

I hear I can put it in place of the oil pan drain plug. Is this true?
