Was driving my 02 mustang last night then my battery just dropped voltage almost died pulled over and saw that the nut and bolt on top of alternator were glowing red hot. Tried to clean ot this morning and in the process of barely taking taking the bolt off it snapped with the nut on it. Is there a replacement piece for this or do i need a brand new alternator. Its the red plug with bolt that heads to battery. Fyi i battery and alternator tested at advanced auto said everything was good.

Pics please.

It sounds like you need a new alternator. Test good or not, there's a pretty good short somewhere.

Both the wire and the terminal have seen better days.

It's probably heating because the cables in such bad condition. You should look over and replace all the ones that are worn along with the grounding cables and strap.

Here's some more information that may help.

Howto perform charging system voltage drop test
https://www.stangnet.com/mustang-fo...perform-charging-system-voltage-drop-test.56/

This is nearly the same problem as the SMA case study. There may or may not be a problem with the alternator. It's quite possible that after clean and repair of the main battery terminal could restore function.
