alternator question

If you're talking about using a single wire alternator, it's my understanding that this does away with the regulator. It's done all the time. I'm currently re-wiring my 67 with a Painless Kit, single wire alt. and a MSN ignition.

Yes, but you would have to (and want to) bypass the external regulator and that rat's nest of wires. Simply cut them, wrap them, and stash them out of sight.

Are you talking about the "one-wire" type or simply a 3G alternator?

this is the alt i am thinking of getting

i bought a Tuff Stuff one from mustang plus, but it's a pile of ****. the first one i got wouldnt put out more then 12V. the new one i got only would put out 14V at 2000rpm, made a whinding noise, a clanking noise, and got really hot after a few min. of running. does anyone know if summits own brand is anygood? should i just bit the bullit and pay $170 for a 100amp powermaster?

Summit doesn't make them, don't think they MAKE much of anything at all really. Find out who really makes it if you can. For example, the Sumit brand radiators are really "Northern".

Also worth mentioning, that alternator is a 2G (second generation) which means it is not a "1-wire". I am no expert but I don;t think the 3Gs are either.

I picked up a 3G Powermaster "one wire" from Summit or Jegs last year. I have not installed it yet but the "one wire" was the whole point along with the 140 amp upgrade. It's the same one from the Mustang Monthly June 2005 install article. I'm hoping it will be the last alternator I'll ever buy for the stang.

For what it's worth, I heard the chrome finish is not recommended because the chrome retains heat which can shorten the life of the unit. Polished is the better alternative.

It's over $300!

Ouch

Powermaster says it can be hooked up as a one wire, but the Summit description says no

Its better to stay away from the one wire setups. Here is a write up, http://www.madelectrical.com/electricaltech/onewire-threewire.shtml altough it deals with the delco alt you could use the info for a 3g out of a fox body mustang, which is a cheaper way to go as well but definatly not the only to go as you already know.

I've had a dozen phone conversations with Mark Hamilton and respect his opinion and expertise immensely. I've bought many of his parts too, I highly recommend his stuff. Call him up and chat, he's happy to talk abot cars and electrics, just make sure you have some free time....LOL.

For me the 1-wire was not all about time savings, it was appearance and simplicity too. Plus I don't expect to do more than 2,500 miles a year on my car so longevity is not a big concern either.

so does an internal regulator mean it's a 1 wire hook up?

Nope. The difference between a 1 and multiple (as little as two) wire setups is how the regulator "ignites" and starts charging. In a one wire setup the regulator self energizes and usually requires a blip of the throttle to energize and start charging. In a multiple wire setup it usually starts charging right away and usually produces a stronger charge at idle.

Internal and External only refers to where the regulator is physically located.

I just ordered this 100 amp Powermaster from Summit -
pwm-8-37100_w.webp

The info on Summit's site is wrong. They say it's not a 1 wire hookup capable, which contradicted info I read elsewhere on this unit. So I called Powermaster and they confirmed this one is capable of 1 wire hookup. It's Summit part# PWM-8-37100 and is $169.00.

BTW - forgot to mention that this alternator comes with both v groove and serpentine pullies.

I switched this weekend over to the Powermaster 1 wire 130 AMP and man did this make a difference over the stock 35. At idle now I am making 14 volts and for needing to go over 1000 Rpm to get it to start working my choke does that. Unlike others I just unplugged and taped up the connectors and with the 1 large wire still connected that goes on the starter solenoid the amp meter works as well. With the wires still in tact I always can switch back as well. :nice:
