Hello-

I have been considering using a kit to upgrade my alternator instead of retrofitting. My question is Would I be able to run a larger gauge charge wire alongside the stock, or should the old one be taken out? Also, What of fuse protection and will the external voltage regulator be able to handle the increased output?

Thanks.

Dave,
I converted to a large case in my 66 coupe. I used the 100amp alt out of a Lincoln Continental, 1977 or so, and it was pretty much a bolt in. The harness hooks up the same. The only thing I had to do was "clock" the case so the terminal were in the same position as the original. Benn like that for 2 years now without a problem.

Did you get the bracket off the lincoln also? I want to do this mod, but haven't found out what to do for brackets.

What of the pulley. is this the same or did you swap it so that it would line up?

I didn't see what year you're talking about... I changed my '66 over to a Powermaster 140 amp alternator with a single wire hookup. It works great and I was able to remove the voltage regulator and all its associated wiring. The charge wire comes with it, as does 2 different pulleys. You can also use your current pulley. I believe it was $249.00 at Mustangs Unlimited.

Hope this helps.

I'm not really interested in doing a swap anymore as I'd like to use all of the stock wiring with in conjunction with a larger charging wire. there are upgrade kits for the stock alternator up to around 105 AMP from alternatorparts.com I think it is. The other option is to use the large case alternator that was optional on most fords from the late 70's to the early 80's I believe.
I don't really trust the one wire conversion alternators as they are activated by RPM and not a voltage sensing wire.

thanks

I used the originall brackets that were on the car holding the smaller altenator.

As far as pullies, same deal, just swapped the original duoble groove pully onto the Lincoln alt.
