alternator wiring

I just relocated my battery to the hatch in my 91GTand I lost track of this one wire that comes off the alternator that I believe connected to the positive side of the battery. It is a hot wire because it was touching my frame and it started melting, so do I hook it up to the battery again is this how the battery get charged.

What is the color of the wire (the one in question) at the alternator?

On a stock alt (2G), the charge cables are black/orange IIRC.

Well I finally got under neath and it says battery on the back of the alt so I'm assuming since it was a hot wire it goes to the battery to charge it and the previous owner used an 8gauge amp wire to run to the battery so since I relocated the battery to the hatch area I willl need to extend should I go back with the 8gauge or somthing else.

Do you run a 2G or 3G? The 2G has a couple of normal (like 10 AWG) wires to handle the charge load, whereas a 3G SHOULD have a dedicated 4 AWG cable instead.

Since you think the constant power cable/wire shorted to ground, did you check the fuse protection for that wire? It is a fusible link in stock form. Many people who do the rewire use a fuse holder and amp fuse (ANL or whatever they are called), but some use a new larger fusible link for an OEM look. In any case, if that circuit protection blew, your alt cant get the charge back into the battery.

Otherwise, I would find the switch and sense wire and make sure it is getting a signal. It is easiest to check this at the alternator itself.

What alt. are you running?

And yes thats why its not charging. Next time instead of driving it just disconnect the negative cable from the battery while the car is idleing. If it cuts out the alt. isn't working and if it stays working then the charging system is working fine.

This is not a smart thing to do on a computer controlled vehicle. The battery is a damper of sorts and when it is disconnected, the resulting voltage spike and irregularity (from the alternator) can damage components.
