Aluminum Cobra block w/ 2V heads...?

iwanted to do the aluminum block for a long time, however there is more to do then just the coolent passage from what i understand.

you have to get a different timing cover and main studs. also i heard you have to use the cobra gears in it. it sounds like a pita but i dont know.

i think i am just going to do a regular block at this point, its cheaper and easier to deal with. i just want the weight reduction so bad.

Got mine for 290
from a 96 Cobra with 12K miles :)

What all was required to make it work? Anything like what is said below here?

Would this block be a direct replacement? http://www.modulardepot.com/product_info.php?products_id=307

The 4.6L 2V Explorers have the aluminum block. I know the 02+ are aluminum, won't commit myself to the 01 and older explorers. The aluminum Explorer motors have the coolant passage already.

Silver04GT,

You now know why I wanted that Mark VIII block that was supposedly in Regina earlier. I have found one quite some time ago, which was used for my 5.0L Big-Bore that is going into my TBird.

You need the coolant passage drilled on the Teksid blocks for the 2V heads and you need a 94 - 95 4.6L TBird front cover or RTV shut the one hole that will not line up.

Silver04GT, that engine block from MD is the Explorer's aluminum block. You may still require a 94 - 95 TBird front cover for it, I don't remember.

Very interesting... Cause I think I planning on staying 2v because unless you buy a whole 4v motor it's a bitch to swap the heads and a nice aluminum block would be pretty cool!

Now im curious. What would it take to put 4v Cobra heads and an intake on my GT block?
Just off the top....heads, cams, intake, timing cover, chains, gears. You want to do a 4V swap, then look around for a used Mark VIII engine and go from there. Even if you don't use those particular heads, getting the rest of the parts from a used Mark VIII is still going to be cheaper than buying them outright.

Amen, as I said in my earlier post 4v swap = certain frustration and lots of money. There would so many little parts here and there that you'd need. It would probably drive the average guy nuts! Personally if I was gonna go 4v I would be ordering up up the 01 Cobra motor from the FRPP catalogue and doing the swap that way. You get a complete motor and computer, etc. clean and simple! :)
