I just bought a set of early model Edelbrock RPM's. I was wondering what kind of problem people actually had with them not having a spring cup/locator? The ones I have only have two metal pieces under the springs. I take it that those are the shims. One had been cut through by the inner spring. No damage to the seat. Has anyone ran these without needing the cup/locators machined in with no problems? The shop by me want $15 per seat just to machine them for the cups. That seems high to me.

As long as you use HARDENED shims they will not wear through, you could also use a ID locator (locates the springs from the inside so you do not have to machine them to fit the OD spring cups)

Size is determined on the size of your inner spring .690", .700" etc....

They can take the place of some shims but it all depends on what you need for installed height and spring pressure, the springs will need to be set up.
