AM/FM reception poor after install

With the help of West Texax Z and 2BADSTANGS, I got the Pioneer P3000IB installed last month. What I'm having trouble with now is reception. The factory antenna had duct tape around it so I removed it before plugging it in. The connection was loose, but not so loose that it needs an adapter. So I put a fresh round of duct tape back on it and it fit in tight again (high tech, I know). It barely makes a difference whether or not it's even plugged in. Have I got a short somewhere in the antenna? If so, is it as hard as I think it is to replace the antenna? And finally, are there any aftermarket alternatives or amplifiers? 'Preciate it guys!

The antenna itself had duct tape,or the plug on the back of the radio? Either or...if duct tape was on the connector terminal for the antenna plug or the antenna stud outside the vehicle,it may have glue from the tape on it.Clean the glue off with mineral spirits,laquer thinner or acetone.Then reconnect antenna.Glue is an insulator.Not good for things that need bare metal for connecting a circuit.Make sure the antenna mount outside the car is not loose and that thw wire inside the fender is not damaged.
