Ok so since I own a 86 i have a amp meter. It doesn't work. I want it to. I need some sort of diagram. I have done a 3g single wire upgrade to my alt and have done a battery relocate. I must have disconnected something. can some one help me out with what needs to be hooked up where?

This is what Autozone shows for an '86, 8cyl Mustang:

Since the ammeter is rated for a lot less current than the 3G, you might want to consider not using it. A voltmeter would be a better choice, and the two small 18 gauge wires to operate it would be easy to run. One votmeter wire to ground and the other to any switched power source on the fuse panel.

would it be easy to put a factory volt meter into my dash so it appears factory? Or maybe a complete autometer upgrade is in order. doubt i have the cash for that though.

I am not at all familar with the dash layout on an 86, so I can't say. Maybe an excursion to www.foureyedpride.com is in order for some help in that area.
