I know it has been asked a lot but I have looked and only found builds using the roller motor. I want to keep my current block which I believe has the date code for a 74 and e7 heads. What are my options? On a bit of a budget build. The motor is a reman with only 1500 miles on it which is why I don't want to switch. I believe these have a taller deck then pre 1971 blocks. Could I swap pistons and re use rings to up compression along with a cam? Already have Lt headers. Dual plane intake and a summit 650cfm carb w/electronic choke and vacuum secondaries. Any help would be great

at this point all you really need is a cam swap to get to 300hp. and you dont need much more than stock cam profile. the short block will be fine at this point. as for the heads, you just need to do a bit of port matching, install larger valves, stock chevy 1.94in/1.50ex will do just fine, and do some bowl clean up, and you are there. and when picking a cam, start with the rpm range you are going to spend about 80% of your time in, and go from there.

Machine work has gotten expensive. I believe the OP could shop around and get some used heads that were more performance oriented cheaper than he could have the valves upgraded and port work done to those E7s

deck the block so the pistons are .003" - .005" below the deck.

mill the heads until you have around 9.5 static compression

do something about the head for improving flow or buy some eddy street heads and put a set of alexes springs in them.

if your gears are 3.00 or numerically lower maybe a comp xe258hr roller cam but you wont have 300 hp at the wheels.

if you do not want a roller cam then maybe a comp xe262h and crane lifters.
