another AOD ?

Will an AOD out of a a 94 superchared T-bird work behind a V8? I can get one REALLY cheap locally that was rebuilt then sat under the work bench of a family friend. Will it bolt up and be able to handle about 250 hp? TIA

I'd think a '94 would be a AOD-E. It would work with an aftermarket computer controller such as a Bauminator.

i think the 94 SC still used a regular AOD, if so it's pretty much a direct bolt in and has all the hi-po factory goodies already. the only thing i'd really be concerned with wis if the torque convertor bolt pattern is the same as v8, if it is then you're good to go, in fact the v6 convertor probably has a slightly higher stall speed as well. definitely make sure it's not E version though, but even if it is the baumann controll kit isn't all that expensive, TCI makes one too.

Thanks guys. I'm going to go take a look at it again. I'm pretty sure it's not elec. controlled. I have a spare flexplate I'm going to take with me just in case. Need something to replace the C4 in the wife's 66 coupe. The 3.55's and the highway at 70 are a little abusive anymore.

bnickle, any idea if a V8 converter would swap in? I have a parts AOD with a good converter lying around.

should slide right in. just double check the convertor bolt pattern to see if they are the same as the v8 pattern, if they are the i'd use the stock v6 convertor, because it should have a slightly higher stall speed than the stock v8 convertor.

btw, i think now's a good enough time to say it.....YOU SUCK, I HATE YOUR GUTS. i wish i could come across a deal like that on a super coupe tranny.

super coupe aod is the best factory aod to have, everything bolts up and I think they have a better converter but I'm not sure.

Be careful with the C-4 flexplate, I tried to mount up my AOD with one and it was
.070" too far into the bell. About the thickness of the block plate. Now I'm waiting for it to warm up a bit so I can pull the trans pump and check if it's still ok. Moral of the story is make sure the bell goes COMPLETELY flush with the back of the engine block before you tighten it down.

I have an AOD 28oz flexplate that I'm takeing with me. It's not like I actually need teh tranny, I have two lying around right now. I just figured that since my wife drive's like Mario Andretti, with shaved legs, I should get something that'll stand up to the abuse......and the price doesn't hurt either obviously

im pretty sure thats going to be a wide ratio aod, with an "a" overdrive servo.

Alright I picked it up today. Ended up geting it for $35 so if it's wrong I don't care...Anyway, the tv valve seem to be controlled electronically so I'm guessing it's an AODE. I'll shoot some pics later. Maybe someone can confirm it for me.

its worth that for parts... the entire geartrain will swap into an aod, giving you a wide ratio, heavy duty 'set with extra friction discs, and a good direct clutch. as mentioned before, the o.d. servo is also the best one for performance use.

Chromedog, I thought about doing just that. Wasn't sure if it could be done or not though. The other option is to use the Baumann computer to run the trans, not that I have a spare $425 lying around Any good videos or books on the swap of internals?

it is actually pretty straight forward,the only major difference is the forward clutch shell, you CAN reuse your old one, but if you use the aode part you can upgrade to the 2" o.d. band. i got a ton of info from http://explorerforum.com. click on the link for transfer cases and differentials. theres a thread on rebuilding a 4r70w which is an even later version of the aod. if you pull everything from the aode, you should only have to set the clearence at the pump.
