Another Clay Bar Thread...

Ok...after 5 beers and plenty of Clay Lube and elbow grease, I finished 1/4 of my hood. The problem is that I have these demonic brown specks on my paint . I have a white stang and of course it shows every little spot, but these little brown specks are evil. I've tried Maguiers three step with an electric buffer...and even WD40 (yes I tried a little bit after my dad swore by it). The clay bar is taking these specks off, but it takes a lot of lube and elbow grease....of course the beer helps, but D@#N. Is there anything else out there that may work better than clay? These specks look like rust spots but are on the paint...darn near bonded with the paint. They are very small, I would bet that if my car wasn't white you might not notice them, but I know they are there and that is enough to drive me crazy. Thanks for the input.

I'm pretty sure I know what your talking about. I had them on my 97 white GT. I think it's just fall out and other **** from the atmosphere, I know it makes the surface rough. But, I didn't seem to have as much trouble as you are. I'm not saying they're easy, but if you rub long enough I got majority of mine out in probably 30 min or so on the hood.

I would use a oxcidation remover like this:

Swirl & Scratch Remover

Scratch & Swirl Remover is not rubbing compound. It uses a microcompound, less abrasive than toothpaste, to gently remove scratches from clear coats and painted surfaces.

If it took you that long to clay bar, you probably didn't do it properly. I can do the entire hood in maybe 4 minutes.

Just bust out the detail spray (aka lube) and try it again.

Good luck man, that first time is always the hardest.

i feel your pain, did the same thing with my hood, are you using that tiny pos claybar u get at autozone??? if so find a place around there that sells the ones that body shops use, its about 10x the size, i discovered this after a week of work on my car, either that or buy a buffer, good luck regardless

The problem though is this stuff is not on the paint it's in the clear coat.

I had something about the same on my '91 firebird, someone told me it was tiny iron particles that got embedded in the clear. The tiny spots did look a bit like rust. I never did get them out, just bought a truck with a ton of chrome to keep clean. Then I got the mustang and take more time than ever to keep her clean, but it's worth it

Tiny Iron Particles would make sense...they are little specks that I can feel, then after tiny bumps comes off it leaves a brown speck of a stain behind and that is what is so hard to get off. Thanks for the input guys. Guess I'm off to the store for more beer, luckily the specks are only on the horizontal areas not the sides. Thanks Again.

Salt Stains Maybe? When My car was in Kansas for the winter, It got brownish/Orange salt stains. I got most of the out with compound, still haven't got all the nooks and crannys yet

I bought the car used (though it is a 04 with only 5K miles), so while I live in Florida, it is possible that it may be salt stains. These spots have been on there since I bought it....I didn't see them when I test drove the car as they are not easy to see, but after I washed it the first time...now they are all I can see...my wife thinks I'm crazy...I spent about an hour on the hood yesterday and got 99% of the spots off with the clay bar and plenty of lube. So now I only have the top and the trunk to finish. thanks
