Another Cowl repair question

I know this topic has been covered many times as this is a key area of problems with us classic stang owners.

My name is John and my mustang has a leaking cowl....

I have taken some preventive measures to help it from getting worse. I have read the other threads. from my investigation both inside and outside the car, it seems as though the "hats are fine, but the sheet metal looks like swis cheese. lots of little holes. I do not weld and do not have much experience with body work other than BONDO. And I want it done right. So I wanted to tak the stang to a few shops to get estimates.

Has anyone else had a shop do their cowl repair and what kind of price did you pay?

I am thinking about this for the fall or winter when I won't be driving it anyway.

I wasn't aware that the '71 - '73 mustangs had cowl problems.

umm....hes right.....i saved mine from pushing me to the brink of suicide with a little rust converter and some kind of paint my neighbor gave me......it wasnt too bad to begin with....but in a couple years i wouldve went crazy cause it aint all to easy to get at ours.....

Two or three years ago I had a friend that said it was a $1,200 job. That was for an earlier modeland I'm sure the price varies from area and person who does it. I have just finished mine except for putting the cap back on and it wasn't that hard. Welding isn't that hard and the money you save could more than pay for a small mig outfit. You don't need much more than a drill, spot weld cutter, welder, grinder and some patience.

Do the 71-73 cars have a removeable cowl. If so, it won't be that bad. If like the earlier cars, expext to spend $2.000 or more for a professional resto shop.

IF I try it myself...

Does the wind shield need to be removed? Obviously it will make the job a lot easier with the engine, hood and both fenders removed. My bro-in-law has some welding gear, so with his help I might be able to do it myself. I think I may still check a few shops and get an idea of the price.

I used fiberglass, and any metal that was there I brushed fiberglass resin on to seal it.

I once had a 72 Montego with a cowl leak. Wotta pain in the butt.....
