Don't forget to go back and snag the oil cooler off that turbo coupe. It's the same oil-to-water cooler that they stuck on 5.0 police pursuit Mustangs, and it's cheap insurance for any 5.0. On the 2.3 liter turbos, it's sandwiched between the oil filter and the oil filter mounting pad on the side of the block. You'll need a mondo wrench or socket to unscrew the through-bolt that holds it to the oil filter pad -- 1" or 1-1/8" I think. Be sure to get the rubber o-ring that seals it if it sticks to the block. On the 5.0, there were originally molded hoses that fed the bypassed coolant down from the pipe feeding the heater core at the front of the manifold and back up to the water pump, but you can just use generic heater hose instead of the original molded hoses. You'll have to use the short police style oil filter, FL300 I think, but I think the minimal loss in filter area is more than offset by the benefits of having the engine oil cooler. I've been running them on both my 5.0's for years and like I said, it's cheap insurance. I think the going junkyard price for one of the coolers should be about $5. Coming on all 2.3 turbo motors, they used to be a dime-a-dozen but they are getting somewhat rare. That cooler is a classic design and I think Ford still uses it on some models.

What is the deal with the Turbo Coupe rearends? What makes them better? I am about to upgrade a rearend and looking to make it bomb proof with occassional strip runs. And what about the brakes?

They come with rear discs and 3.55 or 3.73 gears!

Reviving this thread because I have a question or two:

JRichker,

What set of links and quad shocks would one use when swapping in a TC rear? Do you stick with the Fox body stuff or use the TC links?

Are all TC rears trac-locs? There is a 3.73 sitting in an 88 auto TC nearby....didn't think to check the tag on the rear when I bought the wheels...

Also, the 73MM piston calipers will mount on standard GT/LX 5.0 spindles, correct?

Thanks in advance.

Use the Fox quad shocks. Measure down 2" from the center of the existing hole and drill them 12 MM or 15/32"

All the 87-88 TC rear ends are trac-lock equipped.

The 73 MM front calipers are a bolt up: there are no changes to the spindles, or brake hoses.

See http://www.svo73mm.cjb.net/ for more information. Matt's site has it all, and I spend lots of time browsing through it before i did the TC swap on my 89 GT.
