And then there are the people who say "well I'm never going to run it on the track anyway," well then why the hell do you want 1000hp then? 1000hp is completely worthless on the street.

I support people who want entirely unusable power on the street.
"Because I can" is the only explanation needed.

I also understand that some of these people will die wrapped around a tree in a ball of fire

Yeah that's what I've heard. I think I still have a year left on my subscription. Oh well it was only like $36 for 3 years.

You can hook lots of power on the street. Just need a boost controller and a good setup on your suspension. Sticky tires help too, I suppose.

But mainly I agree with @tannerc91gt - "because I can" is my favorite reason.

My brother-in-law was showing off his two 50 caliber rifles and telling me he could hit a pie plate from a mile and a half away (ex special forces dude) and I said why do you need guns like those, it seems kind of excessive. And he then asked me, why do you drive a car that can easily do over twice the speed limit? I looked at him and said Never Mind Lol.

My point is that I think people get obsessed with HP numbers and overlook too many things that are far more important to making a car enjoyable to drive. If you expend so much effort to make a car have 1000hp, most likely you will have a car that you never drive and only really shows a return on dyno day.

for some people, just building/tinkering/experimenting and seeing how long it lasts or how much power it makes IS the fun part, and actually driving it around is second or third in the priority list (just sayin').
