Another Problem

My car sounds fine and runs fine at a steady RPM at idle but when I back out of the driveway and start to put it in first and ease of the clutch and give it gas, It starts to sputter and jump around as I rev it before I start off in first. So since I had it on jackstands, I tried it again with my new fuel pump in place and it still did it. Key on engine off test said my sensors were ok. I went through the dash wiring and checked for any bare wires. Now I am going through the engine harness. Whatever is making the car sputter is making the headlights and gauges blink too. Also, the power wire to the alternator gets really hot. Any suggestions? Thanks

I'd say its the alternator wiring giving you trouble. Check the plug going into the alternator, ford has a problem with those melting. A new one can be purchsed at about any decent parts store. Do you have a volt meter? If so do this test, its called a voltage drop test.

Take the positive lead and connect it to the positive terminal on the alternator. Take the negative lead and connect it to the positive post of your battery. You should get a very low reading. Anything about 1v and you have WAY too much resistance in that wire. Also check grounds on the alternator.

Well, I went through the wiring harness and found some spots where they didn't really solder the wires together, they just brought say 6 wires together and held them together and taped them up not very good, but there is one wire in particular that I have running through my dash and out by the headlights. It is a fat grey wire with a yellow stripe and it goes from the fan control relay and tees off and one goes out to the fan Im guessing and the other I think goes to the heater controls and the other goes somewhere up in the gauge cluster. Well, when it was out by the fan it was cut off because someone else had wired the fan to run all the time. So they left it stripped and cut right next to one of the open connected clumps of wires. Im hoping that this fixes the wire hotness and lets my car run better. I also found some cut wires that go to the other headlight.

Wow, that doesnt sound good. Make sure you check everything over really good, wiring problems are a bitch huh? If my memory serves me then the fan wiring is brown and grey or black with yellow tracers. I may very well be wrong though.

No, not yet. The weather hasn't been good here and I don't have a closed garage so it's pretty much done in my driveway. I'll keep you updated. Oh yeah, someone that really knows about stangs told me about a ground wire from the neg. battery cable to the fender well and that is the ground for the computer. Well if thats the case, mine was removed when I needed a battery cable very badly and I just stuck a positive cable on there. I'll fix that too. See ya later
