Hey all,

I'm doing research on the 331 stroker kits, I know that they can be pretty potent, so my question is how will a stock 89 GT T-5 5 speed hold up being behind one? Or should I save up my pennies and get a more stout 5 speed first than worry about the stroker?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I plan on making it a daily driver. I'm planning on getting a license plate frame that says "Built to be driven, Driven like it's stolen"

depends on how radical you get with your stroker combo. How much power are you looking to make?

Anyone that drives a stock T5 with a stock engine hard will break it: you will definitely break it with a 331. I had a stock 86 GT with headers,K & N, advanced timing, 3:55 gears, and slicks and creamed mine. The synchros are the weakest link. With a stock engine and slicks,(no subframe connectors), I chipped the paint off the frt. edge of the door because it launched so hard so the unibody flexed, (5,000 r.p.m. launch).

just remember that the T5 has only so many powershifts in it. that said i have seen non-world class T5's live for several seasons in a 10 second race car, and have seen, or heard of, world class T5's that have been built with stronger gears being broken behind stock 4 and six banger cars. it really depends on how you drive, and how ham-handed you are when you drive, and how you maintain everything.

I would like a conservative 400 hp at the flywheel out of the stroker.

Have a roller engine in the garage waiting for the machining to be done.
Would the stock 89 GT T-5 hold up to that much hp? I've been reading that you shouldn't put more than 300# torque through it. What would be a stronger trans which could be used instead of the stock T-5?

are you dead-set on a 5 speed? Your trans choices are very plentiful

5 speed and stroker

I have a 331 stroker using a roller block, compcams extreme energy XR268R cam, AFR 185's, Edelbrock Airgap and a Speed Demon 650. The twin to this motor made 416 HP at the flywheel and 330 hp at the wheels through a 4 speed toploader.
That being said, I would look for either a Tremec 3550 or TKO 5 speed. Either of these should handle the HP. But as stated these can also be thrashed through multiple high rpm launchings But less likely.

Awesome. Thanks folks, I greatly appreciate the input.
I would love to stick with a manual, just because there are some many places here that I would love to rip through the gears.

What does a good rebuilt Tremec 3550 or TKO go for on average?
