another what would you pay question

Well, what would you pay for the following stang?

1696 Mach 1
4.6L modular
T45
9" w/ 373's and limited slip
Mustang II front suspension
99+ Dark Charcoal Grey interior (dash, seats, console...everything)
11" GT brakes
PBR Calipers
ABS...yes ABS brakes
9" rear disc
18" Chrome Bullitts
Great Candy apple red paint

Im talkin a 1 of a kind show car. I saw some guy on teh board is building a 67 vert GT500 clone and wanting $95-100k for his car. The listed above woudl be my dream car personally and I was wondering what it would be worth... I have always wanted the feel of a new car with an old body mustang.

that sounds like ALOT of custom work. from what i understand it is NOT easy to get a modular engine into a vintage stang. probaly 50K maybe? maybe lower.

With the MII suspension it wouldn't be hard to put in the modular motor, you just need a front sump pan, pickup, oil filter relocation kit, and engine mounts. DVS Restorations can supply those parts.

Starting with a good body, bought cheaply because that's all it has going for it I'd say $35k minimum to have built.

You want to build YOUR dream car, a rather unique item. The thing is there really isn't a market for those sort of cars, they're only really built for the builder.

Having said that, if you did all the work yourself except the final bodywork, I think you could do it for less than 30k, and good 69 sportsroofs sell for 30+k, so you can ask more for a custom one.

That's my opinion anyway.

You don't need a front sump pan. At least with the Heidt's setup, the engine would end up waaay too high or waaay too far forward.

If you are looking to build a radically modified car for profit, you are barking up the wrong tree.

Yeh that was pretty silly of me I said with the MII setup it'd be easy and thought of the pan you'd need if you didn't have a MII setup. DOH! You are correct, it'd be pretty easy... once the MII conversion is done.

What would I pay for a car like that? If it was built very well, and was done to fit my taste, I'd probably pay $5,000. I might even go to 6 or 7 thousand. If it was a poor job, I wouldn't touch it.

Having said that, I'm sure the right builder with the right reputation could find someone to pay a lot more than that for something like this - especially if they had an arrangement before the work began. A customizer would also want the money up front, generally.

A custom car isn't worth much IMO. Certainly it wouldn't be worth as much as either a restored car or the sum of the parts.

I agree completely with Max Power - that isn't a way to make money. It sounds like a fun car to build though.

They sell cars that cost $100-200k because they are one off custom cars. Id be happy if my car was worth $30k when I was done building it... Im no professional but I think it would be cool. Not to insult your work or anything but comparing yourself to any of those guys/teams.....well I dunno about that. I for sure am not even close to being as skilled as any of them. This is why their cars are sold for 100k+

yes it was rare but a clone is easily made from the readily available 1697 model wich had a few extra options, a 3rd horse, a removeable plow and it was the first year to come with a canopy over the wagon for the misses....

I agree with what Fostang said - I alluded to it in my post. You may have built the best car in the world, but your reputation has a lot to do with what someone will pay. If I don't know you, it becomes risky IMO for me to spend much on your car.

For instance, the engine is not worth $5k to me if I have no idea what condition it's in. The engine (and every other part of the car) may be all beat to ()#*#@, but not apparent because it's been cleverly hidden.

I'm not going to tell you there's absolutely no way to get good money for a custom vehicle; it's just going to be difficult. Coming out ahead and making money on it will be even tougher.
