Are you in Cali or something? No such thing as costing more for performance work, LABOR IS LABOR. labor should be around 65-75 dollars, maybe less depending on where you live. Depending on the shop, might cost around 800 at the most. You can find as cheap as 500. Hell do it yourself and save the money for something else, maybe an intercooler. It's not that hard, as long as you can follow instructions. Vortech should be very well written and I heard that KB has the most detailed instructions.

i am in nj...the shop is jdm engineering, a very reputable shop. i have always heard that performance shops charge more per hour than regular shops...?

i have thought about doing it myself...i am not much of a mechanic, but i can usually figure most stuff out, even if it takes me longer.

A lot of times that is true. The big reason is people have aproblem with a car and mechanics can just replace with a stock part. When you do performance work you never know what you are going to get into. Its a lot of customizing sometimes to make parts fit and work togethe properly.

I don't remember the exact number, but it was about $500. And that was from T&J themselves.
