My brothers car... Ok, when he lets it sit and idle to warm up the heater works great and blows nice and hot. However, about 5 minutes after driving down the highway, the temp gauge goes all the way to cold and the heater goes cold.............. this isnt a 5.0, but just curious if anyone knows what would cause this to happen??? It doesn't make any sense.

It's probably low coolant/air trapped in the system. Used to happen to my dad's old 5.0 Lincoln. It'd be warm one minute, and then be blowing ice cold air the next.

depending on what kinda car it is i'd say it's one of 3 things.....either you live in a really cool climate and your cars t stat is too cool and your cooling system is over cooling ( which i doubt) or, some cars have vacuum activated valves/doors that open and close to route the air, could be something with that, or, some cars with climate controll systems can do funky things....

It's like a 92 Plymouth Laser. My thought was something like a bad thermostat or air in the system somewhere. It's also burning oil too and smells bad. It was a car my uncle bought and did some work on and sold to my brother cheap. He knows his stuff with cars, but my brother hasn't told him about this yet. He'll take the car back and refund my brothers money to him so it's not like my brother got shafted or anything. I'm just curious as to what it might be.
