i am restoring a 68 coupe and am getting down to stripping down the paint on the body parts..one by one.. i would like your input as to what paint line to use. And what your experiences are ... and some good tips.. thanks! I am new restoring but am determined to learn. thanks alot!!

I would do a base coat clear coat. It is less difficult than PPG Omni or Dupont Imron to apply and is easier to repair from a screw up or accident. I am going to put it on my 70 Sportsroof. Make sure you do not use the inexpensive lacquer based primers under it. Could lead to problems. I use a two part polyester primer that can be wet sanded if you desire.

I second the BC/CC idea. I also recommend PPG products. PPG's Omni Line of products is available as a BC/CC system.

i was reading up on PPG website and saw the OMNI line. Yes, i am saying that i would like to paint it myself. But i need to get access to a paint booth. but that is in the far future. right now i just need to start with a good epoxy primer for after i strip down the paint. So OMNI BC/CC is the way to go?

If you feel that you can get the gun control down, then yes that would be the way to go. If not, then a simple BC followed but a cut and polish would work. Your very first paint job will usually have runs and maybe even some fish eyes here and there, but you can fix all that with cutting, and after polishing it will look all good.

It is the direction I chose to go after talking with my paint supplier and some guys I know that work in the ecoat division of PPG that paint their own cars. I would recommend the Omni MP170 primer and the MP175 activator. It sprays nice and easy.

My word of advice is to practice on some scrap sheetmetal or a chevy (just kidding).

I have found that the clear coat is the hardest to shoot w/o running. The base coat you could almost take a nap when spraying and not get any runs.

Lastly, you MUST use the proper temperature range solvents in your clear coat. If you use a solvant that's rated for a colder temperature than you're shooting at, it evaporates too much before it hits the metal and you end up with orange peel. Likewise, if the thinner is for a hotter temperature, you'll end up running it easy because it will evaporate too slowly.

I appreciate all your responses guys. :O) My welding lesson went well today, next ..gonna learn body work then the paint. i am excited bout this restoration. my first one gotta love it!!!

The "how to paint your Mustang" book is pretty good for helping out. But it was written awhile ago so some of the paint info is slightly outdated..

You could go with some House of Kolor paint which is what the high end hot modders are doing these days. WWW.AUTOBODYDEPOT.COM has links so you can purchase it there.

68rustang, do you have any problems with that 170 epoxy primer. when i spray it I seem to get a textured finish. I have tried different pressure and different guns, even tried thining it out with thinner. I have had best luck with and old syphon (sp) gun.

You might be dry spraying it a little. Just an Idea. I have never sprayed the OMNI line of PPG I have sprayed the DBC and DBU lines. PPG is always a good line to learn on very easy!!!!
