Any reason to replace the PCV valve grommet, screen, or hose?

I think I would rather dig than have to do all that.

FWIW, a pair of long needlenose pliers, a magnet or a long screw will take the old screw out.

BTW, the easiest way I found to remove the screen:

Get a wood screw, ideally at least 3.5" long and with coarse threads. Thread it into the old PCV screen and pull up on it.

Tried that for the past two days and still haven't been able to get the blasted screen out. I've screwed a 3.5 inch drywall screw into the screen, put a pair of vice grips on it, pulled for all I'm worth and still can't get the screen to pull out.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Drywall screw won't cut it... needs to be a wood screw 5/16" - 1/4" in diameter, with real aggressive threads.

I'll try a wood screw this weekend after I make a run to Lowe's and pick one up that's long enough. But I'm curious, why would it make a difference if a wood screw instead of a drywall screw is used? The problem isn't that the screw pulls out of the screen, the screen just won't seem to come out of the hole.

I was wondering if I needed to pull at an angle or maybe there was a lip inside that the screen needed to clear.

I've got a feeling your screen is going to be seriously clogged. I've always been able to hook a fingernaill on the outside frame of the screen and slide the screen out. It shouldn't take much force at all. You just slide it straight up and out.

You might try spraying some Deep Creep, Seafoam, carb cleaner or something like it into the hole (if you can even get it in there) and letting it soak for a bit.

Yeah, I was afraid that would be the answer Saleen0679. From the looks of the PCV Valve and grommet that came out it appears the components are the same ones that left the Ford plant 14 years ago. Solvent and more leverage would seem to be the only answer.

Just your standard size pair. Overall, they're roughly 7 inches long, the jaws are about 3 inches from the hinge to the tip. How long/big would you recommend?

I would think those pliers should work well. I just checked and it is about 1¼ inches from the top of the grommet to the top of the screen so it should only be about an inch down from the top of the lower intake manifold with the grommet out. If it is as stuck as it sounds you'll probably have to get a jawful of screen to get enough of a grip to pull it out. Maybe twisting a little can break it free. Hope you already have a replacement.

Yeah, there's a new one sitting on my workbench. All I have to do is make a new home for it

Anyone have a part # I had no idea they sold them. I ended up cleaning my old one and putting it back in.

Gotcha. I have large forearms so I cant get my arms down there at all. Needlenose pliers like I was talking about are ~ 1' long.

Okay, I'm just about to officially give up on getting the blasted screen out. I spent another hour trying with needle nose pliers only to bang my knuckles more times than I can count, and 30 minutes after that with a bigger screw, only to bend and eventually break the screw head off (what a pain in the a** that was to get out afterwards).

I've sprayed the hole with carb cleaner and will give it one more try later this evening. I hope that when/if it finally breaks free I don't drop too much crud into the engine. Both the screw and pliers were pretty nasty when I pulled them out of the screen, I can only imagine what the bottom of the screen must look like.

Do you have something with a curved end, sorta like a crochet needle? I have some dental pics that are barbed like that, and one can be used to get under a wire in the screen and then pull it up.
