Any Safe Mods For High Mileage 5.0 Mustang

hey I'm new to the forum, my name is Broc, I just bought a 1995 mustang gt with a 5.0, I picked her up for $1200 but she has over 200000 miles on it, she runs strong, and is actually pretty fast for the most part, or at least for now. Just wondering if there are any mods I should or could do to get more performance and stay safe at the same time. Thanks!

I would just enjoy her like she is. In my experience, any upgrades will just stress the next link in the chain and you will be under the hood constantly. I wouldn't do anything unless it's cosmetic unless you are ready to rebuild.

200k wouldn't worry me. Mod away, and address worn out parts in suspension and elsewherw

Ride it hard and put it away wet! Mod it to the moon (so long as it's not your DD). The car isn't worth much so keep that in mind and your mods won't make the car any more valuable so plan to remove any expensive mods if/when it comes time to sell the car or just part the car out for best value.

I wouldn't boost it, but If your compression numbers are good an hci won't hurt it. Being a 95 id put gears at the top of the list.

Gears and exhaust, cold air intake is a waste of money, Don't paint the wheels black. Clean it up.

Make it fast or blow it up fast. I'd actually start with suspension,chassis,aesthetics,etc and just drive it. Then concentrate on go fast parts. Yep I said it. I must be getting soft in my old age(no viagra jokes please)

But if more power is the goal...mod away.

I've beat on a lot of high milage engines.. and I can say one thing. Expect it to let go. The lifters will give out first if you are lucky, if not it'll be a connecting rod thru the side of the block. Maybe a dropped valve. Those are always spectacular. Wanna know how I know? Five. Five junkyard sbf engines in my old fastback blown to bits. Finally, I took the cam, intake and headers I'd been murdering pullout engines with, and put them on a rebuilt 351w and lived happily ever after. That was in 87-89. Word to the wise, if it's your daily be nice to it until you can get a fresh engine and trans for it. If it's a toy, let 'er rip. Just don't plan on it lasting long.

Buy another engine to keep in the garage, either a junkyard long block or pull out that you can easily swap out, or something you can build up as your budget allows. I do this all the time when I get a used vehicle. It's comforting to know that when I'm banging gears and spraying the piss out it, if the block splits or the rods come out for fresh air, then I have another engine that I can swap in over a weekend and get back to the funny business. I have a couple of blocks for my Mustang, wrapped up on stands, sitting in my storage unit, as well as a complete pull out 4cyl for my daily driver Tacoma. A few hundred bucks for a spare at the pick n pull is a good investment and gives me peace of mind. Just my $.02

You seem to be pleased with performance for right now. Make the suspension better, you don't realize that you're driving a barge until you fix this.

Visit Maximum Motorsports, their sht is the best. At least get some subframe connectors welded in. You'll see. Then new bushings, or better yet, new rear control arms. A nice set of shocks.

When you have that set up, then comes the big money of building up your engine (though a jy 351 I think is a really good route to go).

This way you'll have a car that can take the big horsepower. It will be doubly fun if you don't tear your car in two with a monster engine until it's ready to handle that.

Or you could just get a nice set of jack stands and a turbo kit as well.

good info here. sub frame connectors are almost a must in these cars, if your looking to add some power.

you can pick up some used parts for cheap and add some power. i think some of the more basic mods will keep the motor safe and add a little power. look into gt40/cobra intake manifold, bigger throttle body, MAF, and free up the exhaust.

Put a set of 3.73 gears in the rear end. It'll feel more "lively" around town, but won't require you digging into the engine.

Full Length Subframe connectors (preferably not bolt on)
Torque Box reinforcements
Cold Air intake
