IM building up my 351c with 4bbl heads and want to go to a pretty wild yet streeable cam, probally a bigger x-treme energy cam, something that will still leave me enough vacumn for power brakes but give me lots of power. I was wondering what stall speed I should go with, would 2800 be fine? Basic setup, quench heads, flat tops, 10.5 to 1 compression, 3.70 gears, FMX trans, headers. I know I want a higher stall to get me into the power making RPM's of the 4bbl heads faster. I'll probally be running 3.70 gears, i'd like to go higher but for the ocassional/rare trip on the highway it might be too much, would 4.11 make much difference over 3.70.

Thanks,
Jim

Don't forget to answer for yourself if you want a lock up, or non lock up version. I just went through that, and decided on a non lock up 2,500 stall for my new AOD, but my engine is a very mild 302.

You have to pick a cam first. Then call the company you buy a converter from and they will tell you which one.

What he said.

In a perfect world though you would build the motor and then get a dyno run on it. Then you take the print out to the tranny specialist and they build you converter to suit your specific motor needs.

As for driveability...I drive a 3k stall on the street with no problems in a race ready non-lock up AOD....you will want to add an external cooler into the tranny cooling system to help keep temps down when you are cruising below your stall speed.

Correct me if I am wrong...
I don't think lock-up/non-lock-up is an FMX converter option.
That is for electronic controlled trannys.

With a 351 in the heavier Stang, you will want to shoot a little low. The gears, cubes, and weight of the car will conspire to put you on the high end of the RPM rating.
2500-3000 range should be cool.
Well, it will run hot. You should put an extra cooler on the the tranny if you don't have one.
Good luck
Dave
