Anyone else seen this problem?

So I'm tracing down a pretty bad short in my 88, it only takes about an hour to drain a full battery. I have traced it down to a wire going to the fuel pump relay. I have replaced that, and I still have the short.

Here is the weird thing, when I hook up a test light, I disconnect the positive cable. Then I hook my test light to the positive terminal, (so any wire I touch that's shorting out will light up the light) and on this particular wire , it "flashes" not unlike a turn signal, or windshield wiper, and lights up at steady intervals. I disconnected the fuel pump relay (and eventually replaced it), to no avail.

Has anyone else seen this before?

Only thing I can think of doing next is start pulling fuses until the flashing stops.

This particular wire doesn't go through the fusebox, it uses a fusible link. I think I'm going to just start tearing out the interior and looking for rubbed wires.

You should try to contact jrichter in the 5.0 section on here. He has a scamatic for every problem i've ever seen asked! And atleast almost everyone in there has a fox. peace

if it is the fuel pump power wire (Orange/Light Blue) it goes directly to the pin #3 on the fuel pump relay, so by unplugging the relay and pulling the fuel pump wire off the starter solenoid stud, you have isolated it on both ends. Just check its resistance to ground.

If it were me, I would take off all the terminals from the starter solenoid and see which one lights up the test light. Then you will know what circuit for sure has the draw. Let us know the color code of the wire and we can tell you which it is. I really doubt the fuel pump wire could flash the test light.

I once worked on one with power seats, and the switch was bound up by the seat cover so it was constantly trying to move the seat backwards. Never rule out silly stuff!
