According to the ford racing website, the cap adapter and dizzy cap with rotor from a late model 84gt era with duraspark will work on our old 57+ distributors.
M-12106-A302**
Fits all 1957-93 V-8 distributors (except EEC). High performance replacement for high energy OEM rotor and cap on 1977-93 V-8 distributors. Installation on 1957-76 distributor (which had smaller diameter cap) reduces possibility of crossfire between terminals at high RPM’s. Compatible with Ford Racing ignition wire sets.

I think ill go buy this setup from advance today and try it out. anyone ever done this. it would eliminate the need for a duraspark distributor and id still be able to use my petronix ignitor and also the ford racing wires i have sitting in my garage. hopefully its not a misprint!

What you're asking about is what I've been running in my 89 V8 Ranger for 3-4 years. Go for it. My distributor is an older points style also.

thats great, i cant believe i havent heard about this before. i guess the only reason people go to a duraspark would be because of the electronic pickup then i suppose? but with the ignitor, im covered then.

I guess they figure the duraspark is better. I think the Pertronix setup is far simpler, and with a good coil and wires, just as good as the Duraspark or anyother aftermarket dist. I've used both the ignitor I & II and can't tell the difference other than the "II" doesn't develop a miss after a "hiccup" backfire through the carb. It's also good up to 7500 rpms. On the "I" I'm using the flamethrower coil, with the "II" I've got it fed with a Mallory Promaster coil.

well, i hooked it all up and it all fits great, a little loose in the cap, but i think its because its parts store brand stuff and not motorcraft parts. ill replace it soon with good stuff, just wanted to make sure it all worked. very easy way to adapt it to new style looks and plug wires.

I know people have questioned whether a large cap will work with a monte carlo bar and/or an oval aircleaner as well... The answer is yes...

Small (57-74) cap:

Large cap:

It just BARELY works with a six pack setup and the oval air cleaner also. I had to grind off one of the casting fins on the front carb to allow it to fit. Air cleaner base fits just about on top of the wire boots.

its funny how the distributors from 57 are basically the same all the way up to 198? whenever they stopped using these things with the exception of the electronics inside versus points. 30 some years! i guess if it aint broke, dont fix it.. well... or just modify the cap a little with an adapter
