I am thinking about trying out Seafoam for the 1st time in my Mustang, and was wondering if anyone else has done it? Any noticable difference, or any problems?
A little guide or wisdom would be appreciated to =]
A liter of methyl hydrate in the tank will take care of water. It bonds with the molecules and makes it combustable. However, if your engine runs on the warm side and your fuel lines are routed near the intake manifold surfaces, upper rad hose, or heater hoses, then it may percolate in the system as its boiling point is so low. I had this happen one summer. Whan I took the float bowl cover off the mixture was boiling like champagne but I could stick my fingure in it without getting burned. Obviously the car ran like crap.
Sea foam can be used several different ways, they're all listed on the side of the bottle. It can be used as a fuel dryer if poured in the tank of gas, or a carb/fuel system cleaner at the same time. You can also let the engine suck it thru a vacuum hose to clean the valves/pistons/etc. of carbon and other deposits. You can mix it with oil in the crankcase to free up sticky lifters, remove heavy oil deposits/sludge/etc. Basically, its a strong solvent. Lots of uses, when I used to sell car parts, alot of customers swore by it(not at it).
I've heard some people swear by it also. My friend stuck some in his oil and fuel system on his car, but didn't notice anything. I guess you would have to have a noticable problem, to notice if it "fixed" anything.
I have been seeing a lot of Seafoam threads on the Honda forums also and from the info I've read, you should not use it on a higher-mileage vehicle that may not have as tight of tolerances as it used to [as far as running thru the engine] because it will seep thru those areas and cause leaks. I don't know what the mileage cutoff is, but read the can carefully to see if it is ok to use on your motor. oh, and it makes a LOT of white crap come out of the exhaust, so if you like your neighbors, don't use it when they have their windows open!
