anyone ever use sylvania's xe7r 7" bi-xenon reflector headlights?

my last two cars have had xenons and I don't think I can go back. I want to update my 69 convertible with modern components and one must is improved lighting. I've seen mustangs with the tri-bar halogen headlights and sealed beam halogen headlights, but I have yet to see any HID equipped classic mustangs. This looks like a pretty decent setup albeit a reflector type setup (they make projectors as well but they just don't look right). If these would work, I think they'll look good as replacements for the outer headlights (low beams) and I was thinking of replacing the inner lights with yellow fogs.

i'm not really concerned with modifying the headlight buckets since the car is not going to be original anyhow. However, I cannot measure my own car since it is in my parents garage 250 miles away while I am at law school.

I seriously can't drive cars w/o xenons... and these w/ bulbs and ballasts are less than $700. I'd definitely like to see the beam pattern though. But the bi-xenon aspect is sexy...

So is this just a plug and go type of installation or is there some wiring that needs to be done? Are these the ones with the bulb inserts or would you have to replace the whole unit if they burned out? I don't know anything about xenon technology, just curious as to if they would be worth the modification and expense.

They make a 5 3/4" kit as well. And if they are 5 3/4" then it may be possible to use E32 BMW 7 series projector headlights. Like I said, my mustang is currently 250 miles away in my parents garage so I can't check these things.

I don't know any more info than I posted about these things. But I do know a little bit about HID technology from previous cars. The bulb uses 30% less energy than halogen bulbs and if they burn out (they last much much longer as well) you can replace the bulb only and still use the same ignitor and ballast.

Pricing for the kit is around $650 and sylvania is a very reputable company. I'm just in the planning stages of my buildup

For headlights? Why not get an HID kit off ebay (name brand, not the generic junk) for $300 and get a set of the headlights with replaceable H4 bulbs and throw out the bulbs

I guess I look at things differently. Headlights are some of the most important things you can upgrade on your car. I'd rather have a HID kit that is designed to work together than piece together things that may restrict light output and be dangerous on the street. But I also paid 1200+ for european xenon headlights and euro tails for my old a4.

Wow, I bought mine on Ebay for $45 or so. They are indeed 5 3/4". I had to modify the bucket as well, but you can never tell once installed.

They have the blue tint as well, but not quite as nice as yours I don't think. The bulbs are H4 Xenon

I think we are all confusing real HID headlights and those xenon bulbs sold on ebay. There are blue coated (halogen) bulbs available which try to mimic Xenon color/appearance Click here to read the difference between Xenon and blue coated bulbs.

The blue color of Xenon is not due to a bulb coating. The bluish color is a result of the high voltage arc and discharge of internal gases.

These are bi-xenon headlights which utilize an ignitor, ballast, and true HID bulb like most luxury cars today.

I missed the HID part when I first read about it. I know what you are after is a better product, but compared to my old dim yellow haze headlights, these things rock. And the money difference just isn't worth it to me. But you do need 5 3/4", and probably will have to modify your buckets to get them to work. Mine took a hydraulic knockout to punch a bigger hole in the back, along with some longer screws and springs. Good luck.

Thanks, one thing I've learned after a couple of modified cars is that it pays to just do it right the first time and then forget about it. I started this restoration 9 years ago but never finished because I took too many compromises and lost interest. Now i'm a bit older and have 2 other modified (albeit newer) cars under my belt... one being a show car, I finally can approach this restomod with the foresight experience gives you. I see no point in dropping tons of money into a car if I won't be happy with the outcome. Hopefully I'll be able to give an update to this thread in 6 months.

If I buy a TriBar headlamp for my 65 mustang, and I buy one of those HID kit of eBay, would I be better off?
instead of keeping the original bulbs?

yeah you'll have much brighter headlights but you have to watch out what bulbs you buy. D2R bulbs are meant for reflector headlights and the bulbs have a ceramic cutoff on the bulb surface itself. Those are the bulbs you'll need. You also need to make sure that you buy a HID kit meant for halogen headlights which will have the H4 (thats the right bulb for mustangs correct?) adapter base.
