Anyone have a C4 that DONT leak?

I probably made a mistake when I pulled my engine last winter to not go ahead and rebuild the tranny. I was on a tight budget and it worked just fine. I did however put some new seals in it and new fittings for the coolant lines, and new coolant lines. The dang thing just leaks. I have one more trick to try and thats buying a 120 dollar cast aluminum pan for it. Anyone have any tips or is this just one of those things that you have to live with when you have an old mustang. (much like leaky bendix power steering, by the way I replaced every piece of it and its not leaking, but it "sweats" a lot, borgenson upgrade coming soon)

mine is pretty tight........maybe a drop everynow and then........

when i got it from the builder, it leaked like a sieve, i had cardboard under it always..........took it back a couple times, but they never were able to stop it,,,,,,,then when i was having it painted, the shop got tired of it leaking all over the body shop floor.... .., so they took it to a shop they use, and he fixed it...........i don't know what they did, but it is GREAT.........

so i love the way the tranny shifts, but the guy couldn't fix the leak........

Well you don't realize how bad things are until you have everything clean. When i got the car it was one oily, dirty, caked on crud mess, so I steam cleaned the entire car, engine, transmission, rear, everything, then used a couple of gallons of purple power degreasing the whole car. Now that everything is all clean and painted and shiny and installed, i see just how bad this thing leaks. I don't want to put too much money in this tranny because I want to do a t-5 swap. Cardboard and a quart of ATF in the trunk is starting to sound like the best route, but gaaaahhhh, that kills me.

Replacing the pan with a cast pan, pretty much sealed it for me. The other area was the "o" ring where the stick tube entered the case and the "O" ring behind the shifter/tranny neutral sw.
However, I have since moved on to the T5z, so that whole problem is on the shelf.
I know how you feel about putting money into something that's only going to be "in-play" for a short time.

I really really want to do a T-5 swap, anyone live within a driving distance of monroe, louisiana that wants to help out? lol...I just know nothing about standard transmissions, I've never worked on them, never replaced a clutch, nothing. I have read numerous articles on the swap, cable clutch, lengthening the drive shaft etc. Just sometimes you feel like you need your hand held ya know?

Hey Rob,

If you need help in some of those areas, why not check not join one of the local mustang clubs in your area. You might meet some folks willing to help. Also, you can learn a lot by attending shows, although the season has pretty much ended. At least, in my area.

I have looked into a club, unfortunately the closest true mustang club is based 150 miles away from me (thats what I get for living in the sticks). I could probably get in without paying dues, im a dream member, have my own 50 x40 shop with a lift and a tool collection that spans 6 decades, lol, could be useful to some folks stuck in their driveways with the chain hoist around the tree limb. Might join them anyway, give me something to get involved with, thanks.

Pm me with your email and I'll send you some docs on the installation of a T5 tranny. If I can R&R an C4 with a manual with only 18" of height, you can surely do it. Especially, with your man cave setup and some helpful hints from the mugs here.
