Oregon.
I bought my 67 coupe back in 2001 when I lived in New Mexico. That state had very loose rules/regulations when It came to registering and titling cars. Needless to say, the title to the car does not match the Vin. I did not notice that for a couple of years. I never thought to look.

Well I moved back to Oregon, which has stricter rules regarding it. They told me that I need to bring the car into the DMV to have a Vin inspection done.

What LEGAL course of action do I have? Do I apply for a new title? A lost one? I have been putting this off for to long.

anyone have advice?

I'm guessing that they will make you apply for a new title. As I recall, that runs about $300 when all fees are paid.

holy smokes!

do they have any exceptions for old cars? some states will not title a 40 year old car.

I would apply for a lost title, they will do a search to see if there are any leans against it, or any reports of it being stolen, and will contact the last licensed state to find out who the last registered owner was... but if its not hot, you should get your new title in about 90 days.

NOTE: imho ... DO NOT mention that you have a title, much less that it doesnt match... just give a sob story about "bought it years ago.... meant to restore..... never got around to it..... now cant find the title.... etc."
:(

OH, you might also check the numbers on the block, some states have been known to use those numbers from time to time... perhaps that happened to your car at some distant point in the past.

I went into the dmv today and its $55 for a lost title.

I might be a little screwed though. Since the car was titled in a different state, and no one knows who the last owner was before the title was mixed up.

I have a feeling that the guy I bought it from accidentally gave me the title to his 68, instead of the one to my 67.

I emailed him a couple years ago, but he was in korea and had all his stuff in stor

Anyone know about filing for a title for an abondoned vehicle? I might try to go that route for my car. If I could say it was abandoned in my backyard, then wait the amount of time and get it titled in my name....
