anyone know how ignitions work?

Exactly.

In function it's a fuse just like any other fuse.

In application it takes more current for a longer period of time to actually get a fusable link to snap. Alot of people don't like this, because by the time the fusable link snaps, the damage has already been done. Also, they get extremely hot when they snap. They've been known to start an engine fire or two.

Many people choose to get rid of all the fusable links, and replace them with your normal automotive fuses.
