I still have stock turbines on my car, not ready to spend $1000 for new rims yet. I would like to put Nitto DR's on, but 15 inchers only come in 275's. Has anyone done this, did they fit, did they look okay? Maybe a picture if so?
I put both 275/50/15s and 275/60/15s on turbines, but they were the ones off of a Thunderbird. I seem to recall thinking they were 15x8. If THunderbirds only came with 15x7 turbines, then they went well on those, but I dont recall for sure.
for what it's worth, I read last week in a post you're supposed to have the tires one inch bigger than the wheel, so going by that, the biggest tire you should have on a stock 7" rim is 200....for 275 you should have a 10" wheel. I know people do it, but i'm just saying what I read...

That theory is obviously flawed, the stock tire on the car when new was 222/60/15. A better place for information is the tire companies website (i.e. Nitto, Goodyear etc.), but Nitto listed the minimum wheel width as 7.5", so I decided to check with other Mustang owners (who HAVE been known to push the envelope a bit! )
I just purchased another 87 T Top GT which is completely stock except for a few minor items, one of which is original tires. I got the original size from your post but am not sure of the brand. Is it Goodyear? The replacement tire is the Eagle GT-HR P225/60VR15 or so the web site says. I think these are as close to original as I will get and still get the benefit of the newer tire technology. Any help would be great.
It can be done and works but I think it has to do with the tire and the bead on the rim because it is so much wider it is stressed more and I guess can lead to bead failure. The tires on my car were old and on those rims so it obviously can work and
not fail. I figure it would be worse if it was front tires that turned all the time would
what I would worry more about, but the back only go straight, and if taking it easy most of the time it should be fine. Wider rims would be the better idea.
As for the tire one inch wider theory Can't believe that. 11" rim for a 12" tire? Maybe a salesman trying to $$$$$$$ by selling wide rims.

General rule of thumb is to not have the section width of a radial tire (the 225 or 275 number) exceed the wheel width by more than 2". This allows the wheel to actually keep all the tread on the ground. You can physically mount a 275 tire on a 7" wheel, but you won't be putting the full width on the ground because the wheel is too narrow for that wide of a tire. 225/25mm/in = 9". 9-2=7. About the widest tire you'd want to put on a 7" wheel is a 225 if you want to optimize your tire contact patch. For a 275 --- 275/25mm/in = 11". 11-2= 9. You'd need at least 9" of wheel width to optimize your contact patch with a 275 tire.

Stock tires were Goodyear "Gatorbacks"- don't remember any other designation, but were the first unidirectional tire, lasted about 15000 miles and 17 years ago cost $750 a set. 225/60VR15.
Michael, just saw a Fox with 265's on ten holes (7" wheels) at my Ford dealer, turns out he's a mechanic there. Wear on the tires looks pretty even- I did like the suggestion I read to keep the Nitto DR's at 25 PSI for street, 15 for track to avoid "crowning" and wearing tread off the center of the tire. Obviously wider wheels would be better, but don't have that in the budget yet and the tires I have on it now I can smoke all the way through first gear and into second. Tread wear rating is 380, and my car isn't very far from stock, so that is ridiculous.
By the way 87T, welcome! Good to have another T in the group! Does your head get sunburned too, or are you fortunate enough not to be folically challenged? I look kinda like this guy-
