I just put in a cold-air intake and was having trouble getting the mass airflow screen to lay flat again so I decided to leave it out. I was wondering if this will cause any problems and what is the main reason for the screen? Thanks in advance.

don't think its ever been proven that it really helps. i don't think i'd take it out. it has useful functions, including:

serving as extra protection from having debris sucked into intake.
straightens out air flow, (ie less turbulent) like an aerator on a faucet.

prob does restrict your air flow somewhat, but computer is designed to sample air that has been through it, & taking out might lead to the computer getting inaccurate readings.

just my 2 pennies.

I orginally had mine out, but then put it back in after my dyno. My a/f ratio was pig rich, and there were some threads about a year ago discussing this problem. The screen is there to smooth out the turbulent air, just like a screen on your sink faucet, therefore the MAF can get a correct reading.
Wikkdgt you can remove the black piece of rubber around the screen and you will then be able to reinstall it. My idle is rock solid now that it is back in.

I took mine out when installed my CAI, it did richen the motor but I'm spraying with a dry system so It evens out(at least when I'm spraying).
I don't care of debris going into my manifold I don't drive the stang that much.

For the record...

The screen has nothing to do with catching debris. It is only used to create less turbulent air. The same reason your K&N has a screen on it. Also the same reason why they put a grill in front of the radiator on lots of cars. Smooth air flows faster than turbulent air. I leave mine in because I don't have a good reason to take it out.

Not to bash anyone, just want to spread correct info.
