Anyone run 3.35 first gear with 3:73's?

I might be getting the t-5 with the 3.35 first, and i have 3:73's already installed. just was wondering if i am going to regret this or do the other gears make it fun and cancel it out? also did you go to the track? what are your times 1/4 and 60 ft? i betcha with a nice set of slicks she would pull crazy hard! :D

on some days i get lucky and hit a spot on the road where ill get enough traction to pull 1st to about 4000 RPM. its amazing. the acceleration is neck snapping. i havent taken her to the track yet because i dont want to embaress myself when i run a 14.5 because of ghey tires. im hoping to hit a 13.4 or less with my current setup and sticky tires... wish me luck!!

I have 3.35 first and 3.73s out back, and can say first is a really useless gear on the street. No flooring it, and even through second it gets no traction! I will say on the slicks at the track it does feel good, but I also shift at around 5800 RPM, so I have a little time before I hit 2nd!

Also as far as track times go, 12.56 on slicks, 12.99 on radials with basic bolt ons, and GT-40 valves!

:nice:

Z Spec T5 would be better, for 3 reasons.

1.) 3.35 and 3.73 combined is too much, IMO, if you drive it a lot. The Z-spec 2.95 first would be much better. It would let the 302 do what it does best and that's work it's magic with torque.

2.) Overdrive is deeper in the Z-spec so it'll turn less rpm at a given mph.

3.) 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear would be the same and a 5.0 with 3.73's rocks in those gears all ready.

Also if you were to go with 4.10 and Z-spec it'd be not as much first as the 3.35 and 3.73 combo, but more 2nd, 3rd and 4th, AND 5th gear rpms would be almost identical to the 3.35 gearbox's 5th with 3.73's. I think that FRPP had 4.10's in mind for the Z-spec when the choose the gear ratios. But that's just my opinion. :D

Look at the numbers, you'll see what I mean.

Stock T5 Gears
3.35 x 3.73 = 12.50
1.98 x 3.73 = 7.39
1.34 x 3.73 = 5.00
1.00 x 3.73 = 3.73
0.67 x 3.73 = 2.50

Z-Spec T5
2.95 x 3.73 = 11.00
1.99 x 3.73 = 7.42
1.34 x 3.73 = 5.00
1.00 x 3.73 = 3.73
0.63 x 3.73 = 2.35

and now 4.10's
2.95 x 4.10 = 12.10
1.99 x 4.10 = 8.16
1.34 x 4.10 = 5.49
1.00 x 4.10 = 4.10
0.63 x 4.10 = 2.58

And just as a point of reference the 3.35 with 3.55 gears would be 11.89 in first with less in all other gears.

very useful information, where can one buy a Z spec tranny?

are the G-force trannys capable of having a longer gears (pick and choose gear ratios for 1-5 gears)

lol BTW i love the names of these trannys, kinda reminds me of V-TEC
n sh1t...

blah blah blah

i still say original 3.35 is better than 2.95. I blew my stocker eventually that had 115k on it, which i ran a 13.6 with nearly stock. Then I put these crap T5Z things in and blew 2 of them in less than 5k miles! I think they are total crap, I hate the gear ratios as well. I got out of the hole so much better with the stock trans. I ran a best of 14.1 with the T5Zs! Now im back to stock trans from someone elses car and Im running low 13's with my mods but cam not installed yet. Once that goes in I will probably destroy the trans because power will be in the 300 hp range and I will dip deep into the mid 12's... i hope :D

Don't mean to start anything at all but yours is a very odd situation. The trans with the 2.95 will always hold up better than one with 3.35. Also, did you take it easy on the T5Z for the first 500 miles or so? That may have contributed to the problem. If you didn't buy the car new, then someone else probably took it easy on their new car to break in the engine and trans (the 3.35 T5 that you like). Then you said that you got your second 3.35 T5 from another car which could have been driven easily to break in. Good luck in your quest for the 12's. I think the stock T5 should hold up fine for you! :D

just as the title says, i would like to know how your car drives and maybe some opinions! thanks!
The 2.95's will let you go into second at a higher RPM than the 3.35's. So your torque curve will tell you which one is better. But to answer your question, on the street, 3.35's give a nice snap of the neck. But for racing, I'd look into the 2.95 first gear.

thanks notchback..thats quite reassuring
91gt with mostly stock 302,s trim 3:73 t-5 car was awesome at the track with 27" et street's my 60ft is 1.6 and 1/4 11.7 . that was all good until last week i blew the t-5 apart now i am torn between the tko 500 and 600 also because of the gear options.

you are right, I didnt break in either one. I wasnt aware there was a break in period on trannies. oh well. I know the first one was crap because it broke the 2nd day I had it in and I could tell there was something wrong as soon as i got it in. The synchros like pulled apart and just destroyed the inside of the trans. I got a new one for free because of it.
