anyone think of putting a tach on your hood?

when i had my 94 i almost bought a torino, 351C, 4 speed i think it had. one thing that i really liked and thought was unique, was it had a tach like that on the hood.

probably not with the stock hood it wouldn't look right, maybe with a scoop, but anyone ever think of, or actually put a tach like that on your hood? i'm not talking a 6 inch circle monster tach either. haha.

No. I like the Mustang retro look, and I don't think Mustang ever had a hood tach as a factory option. I don't recall seeing a Mustang with a hood tach, although that is not to say that no one ever added one. I think that the GTO had a hood tach as a factory option that was somewhat popular. I don't want my Mustang to remind people of a GTO.

just something different, dunno how it would look. certain people would think its cool i'm sure. especially people who had cars with factory hood tachs. i almost bought a 69 cougar before this car. I'm in love with cars from the 60s and early 70s but wanted the reliability of a 2007, so i'm trying to incorporate some older things into it.

i think i saw a 70 boss with a hood tach, but i could be wrong and it may not of been a factory option

just trying to see what different things will look good. aftermarket isn't THAT big yet for these cars, so to make your car stand out at a car show from the one next to it it takes some thinking and planning out, and possibly some special things that you fab yourself.

I owned a 1968 Pontiac GTO for 9 years and I had an original hood tach for it (factory option from Pontiac). The appeal is that the tach is directly in your line of sight as you look out down the road (or drag strip) so it's easier to watch where you're going while watching the tach for shifting.

if you want to stand out why dont you buy some 67/68 hood mounted turnsignal indicators and drop those in.

I really wish you hadn't posted that. It got me to getting nostalgic about the old days when cars had fenders with the outside rear view mirrors mounted on them, pretty far forward on the fender. You didn't have to turn your head to see if someone was coming up behind you. And now the outside mirrors add quite a bit to the width of the car!

I think this could be a good idea. Like you said, the aftermarket is not that big for s197s yet, who knows, this could be huge. I do have problems shifting at the right time. I can watch the tach, and head off the road, or I can watch the road, and hit the rev limiter (BITES!). This would solve that problem, so I like what your thinking. This is the first I have ever heard of a hood mounted tach, so at first it does sound crazy. But seeing that they have existed before, certainly helps. If you can design something that does not look ridiculous, I think it may just catch fire.

Something else to consider would be a heads-up display. I was just wondering tonight how difficult it would be to gather info from the computer and display it digitally on the windshield. The absolute simplest solution would be a sift light LED, maybe even mounted on the hood or on top of the dash, more in the line of sight.

i was actually thinking of doing something like that. but i don't like any of the scoops i've seen on these cars. they look too small for the big hood. i think the 69 mach 1 scoop had the turn signals in it too.

i also don't know how hard that would be to wire. i suck with wiring, i'm decent at wrenching, decent at body work, pretty good with detailing. can't do electronic stuff to save my life.

and five oh brian, thats one thing that made me think of it. the fact i can look straight at the strip while having an eye on the tach at the same time. i like the fact some have the one fixed needle that you can put on a certain RPM for basically a shift indicator.

exactly. i've been short shifting my car sometimes cause i haven't hit the rev limiter yet and have no intentions on finding it. haha.

its an idea i haven't seen put on a car since the 70s, and at first people make think its out of place, but then after they see the purpose of it, and that companys put them on their cars from the factorys they may not think of it so crazy.

i am thinking of going to a junkyard with my brother that has a whole bunch of muscle cars, or ebaying one. and just re designing it, making it more modern looking. paint match the color of the hood.

i am not so much for the HUD though. my friends pontiac has it, and i have to say it got quite annoying when i drove it. other cars designs may be better, but i didn't like the heads up in that.

one thing that was popular with the sn95s that i haven't seen yet with these cars yet. is a shift light in the Air Conditioning vent.

hah thats a good answer.

i'm heavily considering it. I don't think i could do it with the stock hood though. too plain to have such a tall bump out of nowhere. maybe the cervinis C series though. hm.

that newer goat that was posted, i dont think it looks right with it being taller then the nostrils on the hood. and so far up. i'd probably do it 3-4 inches from the edge of the hood closest to the window.

If you're looking to help you out at the track I think a shift light will be a better bet than the Tach. With the tach you're still going to have to concentrate on it and try to shift at the right moment.

With the raptor shift light just concentrate on driving. When the light flashes in your peripheral vision SHIFT. I had one on my '03 GT and it worked wonders with consistency.

If you go that route, I'd get the one with the red LED. Best color at night. It doesn't scatter as much as the others.

Dude you have a real nice clean looking car please don't ruin it with a hood tach. That would look as cool as a ball sack on the bumper or chrome door trim etc. When it comes to modifying or ideas for my car I always tell myself if your not sure then simply don't.
