Anyone use por 15 inside tailpipes

I bought some POR 15 rust preventative paint for the new tailpipes I have. I was just planning to paint the outside and install them that way until I read through the instructions. The POR 15 manual lists some tips and says to paint the inside of tailpipes from the muffler back to prevent rusting from the inside...I never thought of this. They say to "soak a round glass-cleaning sponge with POR-15 and pull it through the pipes with a wire."

Has anyone actually done this?

I kinda think this might be overkill. The stock pipes lasted 14 years without rusting all of the way through.

If I can find a properly sized sponge, I may try it anyway since I already bought the paint and everything...

Well you said the stock pipes lasted 14 years without rusting, so I would say it's up to you. Do you think it would be worth the money and work to do it if the last pipes didn't rust?

Yeah...I'm kinda back and forth on the idea. The "new" ones I bought were only used for like 100 miles, but there's already rust on the outside a little and I looked inside and it's rusting in there too, so maybe I will do this and see how it works anyway. I've bought the paint, so I might as well use it I suppose.

More than anything, I was wanting to see the METHOD someone used to do this since it seems like it's going to be a major PITA since the pipe curves up over the axle and what not.

the stock tailpipes are stainless steel.....most aftermarket ones are chromed except the real expensive ones which are stainless

Your tailpipes rust not because they are wet. They rust because of roadsalt which doesnt get up inside the taipipes so this would not be a worthwhile endevour.

Furthermore, the inside of your exhaust system will eventually be coated with a SLIGHTLY oily carbon after a few months that protects it well.

Exhaust is corosive. Put high quality stainless on the car if you are concerned with longevity. I put MagnaFlow on my '98 GT daily driver over everything else because it's 100% stainless steel.

Painted exhuats always flakes off. It's a waste of time IMO.

Sounds like a lot of hype to me. SS is the only way to go.

I thought it was the rock salt too, but it was mostly rusted above the axle and not much on the other parts.

Regardless, I don't think I'll coat the inside of the pipes.

The POR-15 tip said that the moisture in the exhaust is what contributes to the rusting from the inside.

POR-15 isn't supposed to flake or anything. They hit w/ a hammer and everything and say it's there to stay. I'll paint the outside and we'll see.

Of course. That is one of those pockets where stuff gets up there (that nasty "salt dust") but it's far enough out of the way that the occasional puddle splash wont clean it out.
