my 88gt tranny story
in which i have no clue whats wrong with it, since this is my first auto...
the guy said 1st was messed up....lol i didn't care @ all or was even paying attention:D for the price i paid on the car i didnt care if it needed engine work....
so basically i will be rebuilding my tranny for (some mild performance/trq converter)...
i got quoted through a friend of a friend to rebuild for 550.... thats with a kit...
well the guy knows how to tweak the Aod and kit it....
1st) is that a good price for a rebuild.

secondly here is the symptoms. the tranny moves the car but its weird like i can rev it up all day and i barely moves, but once it starts rolling it will roll but no enough force to pull it self out of a hard brake... like rev-rev---roll-brake(not enough force to move once letting go of the brakes)--rev-rev--roll.....
reverse works 100%,i could spin the tires if i wanted too.......

what are the possibilities.........

well i was gonna get a 2600-2800 speed converter...but i open for recommendations...
anyways im more interested in the problem, i dont want to get raped for a rebuild....etc....
my other option is buy a used tranny for 200.00 local.... and slap a trq converter in it, with shift kit and be under 500.00
where as i could rebuild this one and add the trq converter and be barely under 700.00 w/ one year warranty...

A j/y trans could lead to the same troubles I would get a quality rebuild with a Transgo shift kit and the B&M Tork Master 2,000 convertor that will keep your tranny issues at bay and will give you room to grow in the future as far as engine mods are concerned. remember to use a good Mercon and a heavy duty cooler and you will be suprised with the old AOD they can be made to work very well. Also if you get around to a rear gear swap use 4.10's it makes life with an auto real fun!!

i already planned on 3.73's...... 4.10's is a bit to much...........i want to be able to enjoy the open highway.....but i will keep 4.10's in mind because i hear it compensates to a 5spd...and being that my old gt was stick then i'll probably feel slow unless i get the desired mild hotrod/street potential out of my aod...
what would 4.10's put me at going like 65 or 70mph....

Punisher is right on. I would go with the rebuild, shift kit and converter vs the jy trans. You never know what you are going to get with a JY trans.

My AOD with a stock converter, shift kit and the mods below in a pretty much full weight GT went 14.0s@100 mph. And that was with completely shot rear brakes(I couldn't even foot brake it above 1200 rpm before the tires would start to turn over) and a t lock that was going out. Put a 100 shot on it and it went 12.72@109.

Yes get it rebuilt. When u do it get the geartrain out of an AODE. Do not use the one out of yours. The AODE geartrain is stronger and geared better. If the guy who is building it knows what he is doing he will know what I am saying. There is a lot of stuff you can do to AOD to make stronger and last. You dont want a shift kit in to to make it shift to hard. The harder it shifts the more wear and tear you put on it.

Unless you are going to do more track than highway use I'd stick with the 3.73s I have 4.10s with my AOD atm and its a bit much on the interstate goin 75. As for the shift kit I'd go for it and have been extremely happy with my transgo reprogramming kit .. It shifts pretty soft under light throttle but when you put the hammer down it chirps em into 2nd and 3rd quite nicely

**NOT putting a shift kit in while your doing the rebuild would be your biggest regret if you decided to do that, if built like it should be you won't tear things up and it actually saves on the clutches in your tranny ALOT but not letting them slip so much for that nice soft shift.
