Ok so today on my way home after showing my stang off to some coworkers ( i work at a phosphate mine so i never drive it to work cept today ). I was headed down a long stretch of highway and laid in to it. the tach just slammed into the rev limiter and i got out of it. the car down shifted after i got out of it and eased back in. 5 or so miles later tje car started to get a shuttle like a shake. leaving the next light i got into it again and she jerked and free revved. No more 3 and 4 then no more 2 then it just stopped.moving altogether. im wondering if i lost the torque converter or the transmission.

They make new pistons every day, so why worry?

Trans sounds like it is wiped out. I'm sure the torque converter is full of clutch material etc probably could flush the converter if it is a nice aftermarket one. What do you plan to do next?

idk. a rebuild and a new converter probably. trying to not spend an arm and a leg. ive also thought about a t-5 swap if it will cost about the same.
is alto a reputable brand? how bout transgo?

A rebuild is not going to be cheap. Transgo i'm pretty sure just does shift kits.

By the time you pay for a rebuild, buy a better converter, fluids and shift kit, you are going to be way above what you could do a 5 speed for. And since it's not your daily driver, the 5 speed will multiply your fun factor by 10.

I'm not saying your current trans is shot (although that's what i suspect), but if it is, no way i'd consider put another aod in it if this is a car you plan on keeping.

A t5 swap cost me $500 in parts. That was without transmission. You can do it under $1000

Sounds like your converter is toast.. Did you check the fluid to see if it smells burnt or the color?

Time to pull the trans. Everyone hates the AOD, but you can make them a pretty decent street trans with a little love. Call Dan at SilverFox. He can set you up with a good valve body and/or trans

Swapped my AOD for a Tremec 5 speed. I have to say one of the best mods I have done on my Mustang.

I've seen low rating t5's put up with 450rwhp and good ones break at 300rwhp. Alot is how you drive it and the tires. I would still use drag radials (can't remember the last time i drove on a non drag radial), but i just wouldn't power shift.
Don't use a no slip clutch either.

I'd also consider giving the trans a small parts refresh and steel bearing retainer before you put it in. You got it out now, and doing that twice really sucks.
Yes, more money, but with the trans out the parts should be like $200 and another $250 or so in labor. It would be good peace of mind.

That's an 1987+ part number.

You sure on the identification?

I've always used this list, i don't think i've ever entered a tag number and had it not come up.
All numbers appear to be 1xxx-xx
