what RPM's are you running at what speed on the highway? and what is your rear gear ratio? it could be bypassing first gear in normal drive mode (my C4 does that)

you feel 3 shifts because...

shift #1, 1st gear to 2nd
shift #2, 2nd to 3rd
shift #3, 3rd to OD.

Unless, of course, you're counting differently.

I have a 97 Ranger with an auto tranny, it feels like it shifts about 6 times

do you think its getting into overdrive? does it cruise pretty comfortably at 65 or are you wound out? try shifting one below drive and see if it goes into a lower gear initially (1st)

What type of TV rod or cable are you using? How are the other shifts? (quick and smooth or slow and hard) sounds like it may not be ajusted corectly. If your running a carb most don't have the proper geometry for the rod or cable and you need an adapter. Need more info.

Oh... he said. Sounds like he may still have the C4 in. There should be a cable the that runs from the driver's side of the tranny up to the engine, around the front and to the passenger side of the carb, where it is attached with brackets.

At the back of your intake there are vacuum hook-ups. (i.e. For the brake power booster and for the C4 transmission vacuum). Do you see a rubber hose that runs down to the tranny from the intake?

Look at the pedal linkage at the fire wall; there should be a rod that goes up and connects with the carb. Is there a rod attached to the pedal linkage that also goes down towards the tranny?

there is only one hose from the intake going to the brake power booster.

there is no rod thats attached to the pedal linkage at the firewall that goes down to the tranny.

O.K. lets find out what kind of trans you have first. You are going to have to get under your car a look at the pan. A C-4 will have 10 bolts, 3 on each side & 2 on each end also the bell housing will seperate, An Aod will have 14 bolts, 4 in front 4 on the sides and 3 in the back, It will also have METRIC on the pan. I don't know what bolt pattern an FMX has but the main body will be cast iron w/alum bell & tail. Don't know the C-6 either but it is a one piece case. I'm sure someone can give you a site with pic's of the bolt patterns but this should help. let us know. Maybe you could post a pic?

This answer, plus the fact that you don't have a cable that goes from the carb to the tranny tells me you have a C4/C6/FMX and NOT an AOD. One more thing you can look for to prove it is or is not...the AOD will not have any vacuum hoses connected to it while the C4 does, does yours?
