aod on a 289?

anyone know what it will take to put an aod on a 289, its for a friend who has a 66 mustang coupe, but he is tired of the three speed so he wants to see if he can swap it to an aod.

yes, and AOD will bolt to any 6 bolt bell 289. you need a 164 tooth flexplate from a 351w with the 11.4" converter bolt pattern. you will also need to use the lokar throttle valve cable. check out www.shockley.net/holley-aod.asp on how to adapt the cable to the throttle arm on carb. make sure you get the throttle valve cable adjustment right or you will burn up the AOD in short order. when the trans swap is done, your friend will likely be wanting you to help with a gear swap next. tell him that 3.73's work great with the AOD especially with the 289 in the lightweight coupe.

possibly, but not sure. if it does it is usually just that the mounting for the trans mount need to be elongated.

Yes, it will have to be modded if you want to use the original one, but I found it easier to start over and just fab a new one from scratch.

You guys need (as already said) TV cable, flex plate, reverse switch, shifter and yoke/driver shaft also. All of these items have things that need to be addressed in order to complete this swap. Then it’s just a matter of using everything from a donor car such as spacer plate/inspection plate, torque converter and dipstick, and also last but not least...the right aod, preferably the later the better. 90-93 are the ones with the most upgrades. The 90ish t-bird Supercoupe (don’t know the year exactly) supposedly had an upgraded OD band, wider or something, I don’t know for sure from my own experience on the super coupe though. there are a few other little things like the direction of the shifter handle which is a simple fix and the connections to the carb, which very greatly depending on carb/intake combo/what year pedal you use ect. I suggest you do a ton of research(do a search on here and goodle) and as specific questions that you need clarity on. Good luck, I love my aod, although I need to swap the rear-end gears for something steeper, with 273’s; it’s a pig off the line, nice on the highway though.
