AOD or Manual?

I am in the process of building my 5.0 and I am wondering which would get me a better E.T.... i have an AOD right now with a shift kit and a 2200-2500 stall... should i switch to a Tremec 5 spd or beef up the AOD with a manual reverse valve body, transbrake and tranny cooler??? Please help me I want a good E.T., thank you

some people will tell you to beef it up and it'll be fun, but screw that.
In my world, a 5spd is always more fun (and usually quite a bit faster)

best ET, go with the stick. The aod sucks up more power than the stick will. More consistent ET's, do the aod. It's depends on what you want to do with the car.

thanks for your guys input, i dont care about consistency, i just want whatever will get me a faster ET, my mind is leaning way towards a tremec.. just gotta save up money for the swap...

My AOD is fun! Add 4.56's and you'll be pinned to the seat. Plus, you can sip on your coffee while you race people one handed. The deciding factor is how much weight do you put on convenience? After a couple NH->MA marathon traffic jams with a t-5 and that hideously heavy clutch, you'll have wished that you stayed auto.

If you do stay auto, go AOD not c4. C4 limits you off the highway more or less unless you stay with highway gears. You need 4.10's at least, with 4.30's being optimal performance/driving gear. You'll need a 3000 stall lcokup converter, not a 2500. The 2500 will not be enough to make it really take off. The non lockup will kill a few mpg off your top end speed and 1-2 mpg off your milage.

All in all, the gears will make the experience with an AOD. The aod's .67 OD will let you run some insane gears like the 4.56's and still keep it under 3000 cruising at 80mph.

Just chiming in.....I am in the process of building a AOD (slowly) with all the bells and whistles. And so far from what I have been told it is by far the best decision I have made with my 88.

This is a subject you will get about 60-40 split on the AOD , 5-speed debate. 5 speeds are fun, but on the other hand a well built AOD is fun also. I swapped from a Tremec to my AOD and love it.

It depends on what you want, really. But if you do stay with the AOD definatley get a better valvebody. A stock one with a shift kit is OK, but a built is the way to go. I have the auto/manual valve body and its like best of both worlds. Some days I would just put it in "D" and ride around, and other days I would shift it manually. Best thing no 1d1 shuffle and OD is on a switch and won't engage until needed..

I would have to disagree with you on this one. I have and Art Carr AOD and it is(was) fun to drive. But I am(was) making some decent power, with a blown 331. I ran low 11's with my AOD & 3.55's in my (old)86GT. That was on drag radials, with a race weight of 3450#'s..




There are downsides to both, and people have opinions to debate both sides. I say if you want a 5 speed then make the swap. But if keep it an auto, do it right and you will run as fast as a 5 speed.
