Would an aftermarket shifter let me have control of 2nd gear instead of only control in 1st to 3rd?

Not sure I understand question but in my car I used a B&M Pro ratchet shifter with the linkage kit I shifted 1st to 2nd then immediately back into 1st to hold second, then back into 2nd for third then drive for top gears. I never really got out of 2nd gear long as I only raced 1/8th mile....lol

My current 90 coupe I purchased the hammer ratchet shifter will get back to you on it performance after I install & test it out.

Right now I am fighting a troubleshooting nightmare on car.

You can hold second gear now! I suggest getting some sort of shift kit Im doing Transgo now! Manually shift it from 1 to D then when the tranny shifts to 2nd shift back down to 1 to hold 2nd gear to any rpm, its very hard on the manual valve, so id really think about a shift kit before you do this, often referred to as the 1 d 1 shuffle!

The 1-D-1 shuffle is the fasted way to ruin an AOD.

A shifter will not give you easy access to 2nd. That is controlled internally within the valvebody. You will need a PA or LenTech valvebody for that.

In order to control your 1-2-3 shifts you need a nice valve body like the Lentech Street terminator.
