AODE with no 'P'ark

Went to leave yesterday and the car wouldn't start. I sit there a sec with things running through my head. I have lights and everything, so I know it isn't the battery. I have an aode so I throw it in N, just to see if it starts and it fired right up. Moving the shifter up and down the selector, I notice that my Reverse is now in R and P. I put it in reverse and it can slide on through to the P selection, no click, no button pressing. Anyone have this happen before? If is starts in neutral, it isn't the safety switch, right? What can it be??

Sounds like you need to readjust the shifting rod that connects the shifter to the MLPS, it may have come loose. To do this, unbolt the shifter from the shifting rod - it's a 1/2 bolt if I remember correctly. Put the car in neutral, both with the shifter and by manually pulling the shifter rod towards the rear of the car all the way (Park) and then pushing it forward two clicks (Neutral) on the shifting rod to get it in Neutral. Then retighten the shifter to shifting rod bolt.

If you get under there and the shifting rod is still on tight and doesn't appear to have moved, check to see if the MLPS has somehow come loose. (two screws on the tranny).

If the MLPS /has/ come loose, put it in neutral and look with a flashlight for two notches cut into the MLPS - line them up, tighten it down to the tranny and then follow the instructions above for setting up your shifter properly.

Good luck,
Wes
